What are "refried beans"?  To me, they taste like mush, not good at all.  Are they actually fried?
Usually, refried beans are this terrible non-descript brown paste, that tastes and has the texture roughly what you'd expect from what they look like. Utterly gross.

I can only count a small number of times I've ever had good refried beans... But good refried beans are delicious.

The best I've ever had were a place outside Vegas where they used refried black beans for dipping your tortilla chips. It was a glorious experience that made me hate how bad typical refried beans are even more than usual.

I've had lots of great refried beans.

I did begrudgingly finish off the refried beans at dinner on Saturday... But that's mainly because I hadn't eaten anything except the Southwest airline snacks all day so I was absolutely famished. Can't say I actually enjoyed them.

(Note: that's not a criticism of that restaurant chain... Usually I don't eat the refried at any Mexican joint, so I'm not a good barometer. If anything, theirs were better than average...)

this has been my experience
I usually tell them to hold the beans, because I'm not going to eat that tasteless brown mush

In this case, I realize it's a "me" problem. Most other people I know like the refried beans at most places just fine. Hell, most of the people I know like refried beans out of a can [blech!]...

Ewww.  Refried beans out of a can are truly terrible.  They are accurately represented by your descriptions of "mush" or "paste."

Refried beans at a restaurant should be flavorful and tasty.  If you're getting refried beans at restaurants, that are anything like refried beans out of a can, then you're just not going to the right places.

Maybe, but I'm not the one stumbling into shitty food everywhere I go.

My point was that I'm really not ordering refried beans, because even when they're "average to good", I don't like them. To me, they're still "mush" or "paste".

If they're "great", then I might like them. A bit. But probably not as much as I'd like something else on the menu that doesn't include them. So even then I rarely order them, and unless they're "great", if they're included with something I ordered I'll leave them uneaten on the plate.

I avoid refried beans because every time I had them back when they were awful.  Black beans usually range from OK to pretty good.  I just don't understand refried beans, I probably should try them again at some of the better Mexican places here.  My wife doesn't like either type.

I'd say the refried beans I have tasted are the worst common menu item I've ever eaten.

the beans are filler like the rice they are usually served with

if they don't belong in chili, they probably don't belong on an upscale platter of tex-mex

Who the hell wants an "upscale" platter of Tex-Mex?  Tex-Mex is comfort food not haute cuisine.  It's poor people food.

"Tex-Mex" around here moved upscale pretty fast, aside from the "real" ones on Buford Highway.
