My daughter works for an outfit that does web redesigns.  She has some fun stories.  Companies pay them to update/refresh/fix their web sites, so she goes in and finds what MDT talks about, a mess of patches, different languages, the equivalent of software being updated using floppy discs.

They tell the company it would work best if they throw it all out and start clean, but the company won't pay more money (which isn't that much more).  So, they add more patches and clunkiness and work arounds.  The next time it is to be updated will be a larger mess.

I run into this using travel sites, my brokerage site, banking sites, etc.  They "refresh" something that was working pretty well, the new system actually is worse, maybe one item is a bit more clear, maybe not even that.  Schwab recently changed their private banking site and the old one was much better.  I use them for my checking account.

My daughter worked on one travel site I used pretty often, Hilton, and it didn't get worse, it's "prettier" now, I guess, the functionality at least is OK.

Sounds like job security :)

The hilarious thing, to me, is she majored in French and English at THE OSU.  Then she "learned to code".

I coulda saved her a lot of time, and you a lot of money.

The French have better food, the English have better television.

That's really all there is to know about them.

I recall all the debate (and more) about RPM versus algebraic.  Devotees on both sides could get pretty excited.  In general, if you favored RPN it was a sign you were a true "nerd".  Only floozies used algebraic (TI).  I was in the TI camp, in part because that is what my Dad bought me, first a TI-10 in HS and then later a TI-50 in college.  I could use an HP of course, I just didn't particularly find it obviously superior, much as today I don't find the Appleverse superior to Windows.

I however do recall the smuness of some HP users and the disdain they felt for TI users.  It was amusing.  Folks would conduct races to solve some problem, the winner would win by maybe a second.

At some point, I got into math that didn't compute.

I bought myself one of these with scholarship stipend money.  Used it extensively in college and although I still have it, I don't think I've used it once, since.  Computers do it all for me now.

Loved mine.  It was reverse polish, which some people didn't like.  As a computer programmer the manner of programming/data entry never bothered me, all methods were fine.

As CD suggested, I too noticed that there was definitely an undercurrent of nerdy superiority complex associated with people who used the HPs with reverse polish.  It never mattered to me, though, I was too busy chasing girls and drinking beer to worry about dorky shit like that.
