Purdue Boilermakers (0-1, 1-1) at Syracuse Boilermakers (2-0)
NOON - Syracuse, NY - espn2
As fun as any OOC game between Power 5 teams is, this sure would have been a lot more fun around the turn of the century, to see Drew Brees and Donovan McNabb go after it.  These teams did meet in 2004, their only prior meeting, but Purdue was peaking, and Syracuse was past theirs.  The Boilermakers handled the Orange (maybe still the Orangemen then?) 51-0.  Syracuse, early in the Dino Babers tenure, was successful once, but overall too reliant on the pass.  Then, after a couple of down years, found a workhorse back in Sean Tucker in 2021.  Maybe they've figured out a balance, with Tucker still the focal point, but Garrett Shrader being hyper-efficient, completing nearly 80% of his passes overall, at nearly 13 ypa last week, and 5 touchdowns.  Sean Clifford figured out something against the Boilermaker secondary late, and that's the game film Syracuse needs to use.  But the Syracuse defense hasn't seen a quarterback like this.  Malik Cunningham is certainly a threat, but Syracuse dropped heavy, and bet that Cunningham couldn't throw into tight windows, and wouldn't be able to beat them consistently with his legs.  Against UConn, they gave the Huskies everything underneath, and let their defensive backs make plays.  They did, because they could out athlete them, even allowing 85% completions, for just 109 yards.  Against Purdue, Aidan O'Connell will hit those tight windows if you don't pressure him, and if you trust the Syracuse DBs to make plays in space against the Purdue weapons, as inexperienced as they are, that's a losing bet.  Even if Broc Thompson isn't 100% yet.

Should be an interesting game and given the current appearance of the B1G-W, this could have an impact on the ranking/record of the B1G-W representative in Indy.

King Doerue is out versus Syracuse (calf injury).  Broc Thomson is also not expected to play.

I know it's fan-cliche-101, but frankly, from what I saw last week, I think Mockobee is the better option at RB anyways.  I know it was against a hapless ISU team, but Mockobee just seems faster than I've ever seen Doerue.  With Syracuse running the 3-3-5, he'll hopefully get the chance to prove it.

I agree.

I'd also like to see Kobe Lewis get a bunch of carries.  He transferred from CMU.  Didn't play last year because of injury.  He looks like a dangerous, make you miss, type RB with vision that Purdue has been needing.  He can make catches out of the backfield as well, which is a Brohm requirement.

This is quietly going to be one of the best games of the weekend.

Syracuse has an excellent RB.  Purdue looked pretty good against the run vs Penn State, and of course ISU.

Syracuse QB has looked good this year.  Boiler front 7 will be better than anything Cuse has seen.

We all know O'Connell can throw the rock around, and Chuck Sizzle has exploded as the B1Gs most productive WR.  Cuse has a good secondary and runs a 3-3-5 designed to stop the spread.  I think Penn State has a better secondary, and Purdue was moving the ball and putting up points just fine.

What the deciding factor may be is Purdue's anemic run game vs the Syracuse 3 man front.  Can Brohm bring himself to try to pound the ball down their throats?

Completely agree with this. I’m looking forward to this game. Shrader has looked really good at QB. Hopefully Boilermakers can reign him in.
