Powder Rankings Week Two
« on: September 10, 2017, 07:45:56 AM »
1. Penn State: Hardly a dominant effort, and the offense had enough fits and blips to be a bit concerned.  Still, a comfortable win over the in-state (non)rival.  Defense continues to play well.  Marcus Allen is a hitter.

2. Michigan: Thoroughly unimpressive and booed by the home fans, but still, they can play defense, which is enough.

3. Wisconsin: Pretty through beatdown, even if the score wasn't super impressive.  But needs to play a decent team before we know what their made of.

4. Ohio State: Got whipped by an actual good team.  Rare case of a team getting whipped despite the offensive and defensive lines playing quite well.  Quarterback was bad, linebackers were bad, need to get it figured out as 8-4 is staring them in the face.

5. Michigan State: Played strong defense, got enough offense.

6. Iowa: Squeaked out a win against the Cyclones, which has been challenging for them.

7. Maryland: Run young team run.

8. Minnesota: Convincing win in the Rodent Bowl

9. Purdue: Look like a competent outfit that can give anyone some trouble.

10. Indiana: Nice win against Virginia

11.  Northwestern: Blech

12. Nebraska: Yuck

13. Illinois: 2-0 baby

14. Rutgers: Gross

So far I think the top 4 of the B1G is down but the middle 5-11 looks solid. If i had to guess the conf. winner finishes with 2 losses.

1. Michigan - didn't watch against Cincy but was really impressed by the D in the FL game.
2. Penn State
3. Ohio State
4. Wisconsin
5. Maryland - I think they might be a top 25 team. Backup QB looks good (supposedly a good kroot). I just think they have to stop constantly running that Jet nonsense (its fine every now and then, just pick your spots) because Durkin wears out his own D. I can see them knocking off one of the top 3 if they learn to control the clock and shorten the game.
6. Minnesota
7. Sparty
8. Iowa
9. Purdue
10. Nebraska - I couldn't really tell if Oregon or nebraska were good teams in that game.
11. Indiana
12. Illinois - quietly 2-0
13. NW - Duke is bitey this year. They are the ACC's Maryland.
14. Rutgers

To me, Penn State appears to have the best overall combination of offense and defense.

Buckeye fans are really despondent.

To minimize my knee jerk reactions I'm still using a +/-3 cap on my rankings. No team can move up or drop more than 3 spots based off 1 weeks results.

TOP
1) PSU (--) - Dominate.
2) M*CH (--) - Scrappy Cincinnati worried the Big House
3) Wisconsin (--) - Scrappy Kiffin Owls worried Camp Randall.

MID
4) Maryland (+1) - clicking along.
5) Iowa (+1) - fun OT win
6) Mich St. (+3) - Beating directional teams like they should
7) OSU (-3) - Humbling loss, script is easy to beat the Bucks.
8 ) Minnesota (+2) - rowing in Corvallis FTW?
9) Nebraska (-2) - Scrappy 4th quarter, not enough.
10) Northwestern (-2) - Duke looked good.

BOTTOM
11) Indiana (--)
13) Purdue (+1)
12) Illinois (-1)
14) Rutgers (--) worse team eva'

Husker defense needs to get on the cocaine in the first half, no reason to wait until halftime

Time to shake things up in the middle.

1. PSU
Still the clear #1

2. OSU
OSU has issues but has the talent and time to work them out the next few games, and Oklahoma is a legit top 5 team.   But it may be time to forget about making the playoffs.  If they get the offense figured out, they might still win the conference.

3.  Wisc
Wisc has been decent enough not to drop but not good enough not to move up from #3

4. Mich
Of the schoosl in the middle , Mich's OOC victory over FL most impressive right now

5. MD
Victory over Tex is a little impressive too

6. Minn
Not sure if Ore St is any good, but still impressive to go out west in win on the road.

7. Iowa
Iowa escaped but its still a win against a P5 on the road.

8. Neb
Not sure what to make of Neb's blowout, I mean close loss.  Does this mean they are bad or not so bad?

9. Indy
Va may not be any good, but its a win against a P5.

10. Pur
Thus team is starting to scare me.

11. MSU
Not jumping on the MSU bandwagon just yet

12. NW
Just when I decide to write off NW as awful, is usually when they pull a big upset and become decent, but right now they look awful.

13.  ILL
May be some hope for Lovie Smith afterall.

14. Rut
Ugh,  No hope for this team this year.

1. Michigan - Yesterday was disappointing, but the problems are all fixable. Playcalling was uninspiring but the defense scored twice. Florida is still the league's best win.
2. Penn State - I'm not sure how good Pittsburgh is considering they barely beat Youngstown State.
3. Wisconsin - If they start slow against better teams, someone will beat them. Fortunately they don't play Iowa or Michigan until November.
4. Ohio State - Oklahoma is a top team, but they exposed OSU's weaknesses.
5. Maryland - Not sure how good they are, but UCF will be a good indicator next week.
6. Iowa - I know the Hawkeyes usually struggle against the Cyclones, but I thought their defense should be better.
7. Purdue - They look good enough to make a bowl game. The Missouri game will be another good indicator.
8. Indiana - Not sure where to put this team. Virginia probably isn't very good.
9. Minnesota - Looked much better than they did against Buffalo (which also challenged Army so maybe they're not terrible), but Oregon State is clearly a bad team.
10. Michigan State - Not sold yet, but definitely surprised that they weren't challenged by WMU.
11. Nebraska - Even though they almost came back to win, from what I saw, they look bad on defense.
12. Illinois - WKU might not be as good this year with a new coach, but I'm still surprised Illinois beat them and shut down their offense.
13. Northwestern - Duke isn't bad but getting blown out by them after struggling with Nevada is. Fortunately they have Bowling Green next weekend.
14. Rutgers - Back to the bottom. At least they have a bad FCS team next week.

1.  Penn State (1) - McSorely had a pretty mediocre game and they still won by 19.  The defense is looking like a strength now.
2.  Michigan (3) - Speight is awful, but he doesn't have to be very good with that defense.
3.  Wisconsin (4) - Might be #1, might be #4.  Not enough info yet.  They are beating lesser teams like they should.
4.  Ohio State (2) - I really thought their offense had come around... I guess I was wrong?
5.  Maryland (5)
6.  Michigan State (8 )
7.  Minnesota (10
8.  Iowa (6)
9.  Nebraska (9)
10.  Purdue (12)
11.  Indiana (11)
12.  Northwestern (7)
13.  Illinois (14)
14.  Rutgers (13)

it's just my opinion, but it appears to me you guys are being too tough on them bucks.

OU has all the offensive tools anyone could ask for, and though Riley isn't exactly an unknown, he is performing above his station.  Their D is pretty good, it's fair to say.

this isn't about tOSU faltering, in my opinion- it's about OU playing very well.  yeah, they coughed the ball up twice needlessly in the first half, but they played in a tight rhythm all night and kept the tOSU D honest- they ran the bubble screen to perfection in a couple instances, and when that play is done right (it was) at the right time (it was) it's good for at least 10~15.

to top that, the pass in the fourth that was called incomplete on the field (it wasn't) could not have been better placed- the defender did it right and which is all that could be asked of him, but that pass was a six inch diameter ball in a four inch diameter box- perfect... there is nothing you can do about that.  that is ALL on the Offense executing to perfection.

it ISN'T tOSU fouling it up... it was OU playing one helluva game, not panicking early, and just plain executing on both sides... three out of five i think this game is within a single possession, just not that one.  I also think tOSU could still very well be a top 5 team.  it's just that OU is likely where they should be right now.
