Penn State (1-0) at Pitt (1-0)

Figured I'd start a thread about this game, because it is arguably the "game of the week" in the B1G.

Last week Penn State survived against a very good Appalachian State squad.  ASU is an excellent team, and I expect them to win the rest of their games and finish as Sun Belt champions.

Pitt played Albany, a middling FCS team that will likely finish around .500.  However, they jumped out to an early 33-7 lead.  Pitt called off the dogs in the second half, and the final score remained 33-7.

Last season:  While Pitt finished last season at 5-7, they did knock off an undefeated Miami team in their last game.  In that upset win, Pitt switched to their freshman QB, and he was on fire.  This is the same QB that will start against Penn State.  Very scary.

I expect Pitt to be fired up at home and play well above their talent level.  This will probably be a tight game.

I feel like Pitt might just get 'em again.

Pat Narduzzi needs a big season to stick around I think.  They don't necessarily have to beat Penn State, but it would go a long way to keeping his seat cool.  The ACC looks pretty soft this year (outside of Clemson) so there's no reason they can't at least go bowling.

That said, Penn State may have gotten a wake-up call.  If that's the case, I think they win by 2 scores.  If they're lackadaisical or Pitt plays exceptionally well, it's going to be a lot tighter.

Winning big games has generally not been Pitt's problem.  Avoiding the subsequent trip ups has.

Barring a 3-9/2-10 season he's fine. Narduzzi is generally well-liked at Pitt and the schedule is tough again.
Can't really tell how good pitt is but right now they really do just look like a poor-mans Sparty (or a Sparty with a lousy secondary). Probably a 5-7 to 7-5 season. There will be a bad loss (they always lose to UNC), and should be a win at least one of these 5 (VT, PSU, ND, at UCF or Miami). Think the QB and DL will be good. The running game looks good enough.
They'll try to do what they did to Miami and what they did against PSU in the 1st half of last years game. Which is just to eat up clock and shorten the game. They need a few big plays on offense to beat PSU however while the offense is OK there's no real gamebreakers.
PSU 27 Pitt 16

I actually think Pitt will win this one.  Penn State has perhaps their weakest linebacking group in years, and their defensive tackles aren't exactly lighting the world on fire.

This will be a high scoring affair, and Trace McSorely should keep it close for the good guys.  However, there are too many new players on offense, and Pitt is more than good enough to shut down PSU's run game.

With that said, Kevin Givens will be back at DT (our best defensive tackle), and I expect Micah Parsons to see more and more minutes as the season goes on.  It's possible they will be much better defensively than they were last time around.

Plus they just paid Kevin Stallings to go away.  Not sure what is left on Narduzzis contract, but Pitt isn't likely to be able to be in that position in both sports
