Other P5 Championship races after Thanksgiving weekend

ACC:

The ACC is playing a divisionless schedule with Notre Dame so the top two teams will meet in the CG.  There was little change at the top this week because 7-0 Notre Dame (UNC) and 6-1 Clemson (Pitt) both won.

  • 8-0 Notre Dame:  The Irish are a near lock.  They are mathematically in even if they lose one of their two remaining games (v Cuse, @ Wake) but they could miss out if they lose both.
  • 7-1 Clemson:  The Tigers control their own destiny because they beat the Hurricanes but if they lose a game that opens the door for Miami.
  • 6-1 Miami:  The Hurricanes need to win out (vUNC, vGaTech) and hope somebody takes out Clemson or ND loses out.
  • 6-3 UNC:  The Tar Heels can't catch ND but they could tie Clemson if they win out (@Miami) and Clemson loses out.  UNC might theoretically be able to win that tie.  It would come down to record against the next best or next or next in the ACC.
  • 6-3 NCST:  The Wolfpack can't catch ND but they could tie Clemson if they win out (vsGaTech), Clemson loses out, and UNC loses a game.  NCST might theoretically win that tie.  It would come down to record against the next best or the next or the next in the ACC.
  • All other ACC Teams are eliminated because they have at least four losses each and ND can do no worse than 8-2 while Clemson can do no worse than 7-3.

B12:
ISU's win over Texas practically (but not mathematically) clinched a spot for the Cyclones and eliminated the Longhorns.  It is basically three teams for two spots but there is a theoretical possibility that Texas and/or WVU could throw a monkey-wrench in things.
  • 7-1 ISU:  If the Cyclones win their last game (vsWVU) they are in.  If they lose they are still in so long as a slew of other things don't all go the wrong way for them.
  • 5-2 OU:  The Sooners control their own destiny.  If they win out (vs Baylor, @WVU) they are in.  They might make it with a loss but they'd need help.
  • 5-2 OkSU:  The Cowboys need somebody to knock off the Sooners.
  • 4-3 Texas:  If the Longhorns win out (@KSU, @KU) they would finish 6-3.  They'd still need help.
  • 4-3 WVU:  If the Mountaineers win out (@ISU, vOU) that would finish 6-3 and knock the Sooners down to at least three losses.  They would still need help.
  • All other B12 teams are mathematically eliminated.

PAC12:
PAC12-N:
  • 3-0 Washington (vStan, @Ore):  Controls their destiny.
  • 3-1 Oregon (@Cal, v UW):  Controls their destiny.
  • 2-2 OrSU (@UT, @Stan):  Could only win if they win out and Washington loses out and Oregon loses to Cal and WSU loses a game or is ineligible.  Then they'd tie Oregon at 4-2 and win based on H2H.
  • 1-1 Washington State:  Probably ineligible.
  • 1-2 Stanford:  The Cardinal need all kinds of help.
  • 0-3 California:  The Bears are eliminated because they can't do better than 2-3.
PAC12-S
  • 3-0 USC (vWSU, @UCLA):  Controls their destiny, I think.
  • 2-0 Colorado (@Zona, vUT):  Either controls their destiny or needs a USC loss (I'm not sure because they don't play each other so the tiebreaker would be complex to say the least).
  • 2-2 UCLA (@ASU, vUSC):  Needs all kinds of help.
  • 0-1 ASU:  probably ineligible.
  • 0-2 Utah:  Needs all kinds of help.
  • 0-3 Zona:  The Wildcats are eliminated because they can't do better than 2-3.

SEC-E:
  • 7-1 UF:  The Gators are in provided that they win one of their two remaining games (@TN, vLSU) or UGA loses theirs.
  • 6-2 UGA:  The Dawgs can only get there if they win their last game (vVandy) and UF loses both of theirs.
  • All other SEC-E teams are eliminated.
SEC-W:
  • 8-0 Bama:  The Tide have clinched because even if they lose to LSU they can do no worse than a tie with aTm and they beat the Aggies H2H.

The imponderables is if COVID hits and wipes out some teams.

Thanks Medina.
The hard part this year is the almost random changes in measurement and tie-breaking.

The B1G and PAC are using a system where winning percentage is effectively replaced by number of losses.

alabama has lsu and arky left. the arky game got moved from dec 5 to dec 12 to allow bama to play both lsu and arky. lsu game couldn't be rescheduled to dec 12 because lsu already has game with uf rescheduled for then. Arky didn't have a reschedule game yet (nor did bama) and lsu had ole miss on dec 5, but it's being moved to dec 19, seccg weekend, because neither are eligible for it.

all that to say technically aTm still has a mathematical shot.

Yeah, Bama could lose to LSU and Arky in successive weeks.  It's possible.

Thank you.  I wasn't aware that the Arky game had been rescheduled and thought they only had one left and thus could do no worse than a tie with aTm which they would win.

Yeah, Bama could lose to LSU and Arky in successive weeks.  It's possible.
I know it is a very remote possibility but there are two things to consider here:
  • Even in a normal year, I like to stick to "mathematical possibilities" because you never know what might happen.
  • This year I think it is even more important to stick to "mathematical possibilities" because you never know who might get COVID.  While Bama should obviously beat both Arky and LSU with relative ease who knows what would happen if they got a massive COVID outbreak and lost a bunch of starters plus some of their depth at a few key spots.  Suppose all of a sudden Bama's backup QB is handing the ball to their backup RB and throwing to backup WR's all while working behind Bama's 4th string OL.  Honestly, they might win those games anyway but . . .

In the ACC, Notre Dame clinched a spot in the CG in what has to be the weirdest way ever.  The ACC rescheduled some games and now Notre Dame has clinched a spot because they now only have one left.  Meanwhile, Clemson and Miami are still in the running for the other spot.  Clemson has the inside track because they beat Miami H2H but a Clemson loss opens the door for the Hurricanes.

It would really suck if Notre Dame gets a conference banner in the only year they will ever be in a conference.

I agree but I'm not all that worried about it.  The Irish needed a last second TD and OT to beat a shorthanded Clemson at home.  If Clemson is anywhere close to full strength I can't imagine the Tigers losing to the Irish again.
