« on: July 24, 2022, 04:02:33 PM »
The resumes:

2001 Florida (10-2)
  • Lost at Auburn in October after reaching #1
  • Lost season finale at home to #5 Tennessee (which had been moved due to 9/11), with a spot in the SEC Championship, and BCS Championship on the line
  • Won 6 games against ranked teams, by an average of 31.5 points
  • 24-10 win over Georgia was their only win all season by less than 24 points
  • All-Americans: WR Jabar Gaffney (consensus), QB Rex Grossman, OT Mike Pearson, DE Alex Brown, LB Andra Davis

2008 Texas (12-1)
  • Lone loss was on the final play at #8 Texas Tech
  • Three way tie for Big XII South title, with Oklahoma and Texas Tech, with Oklahoma going to the Big XII title game based on BCS rank
  • Beat four Top 11 teams, including #10 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl
  • SP+ #8 team of the 00s
  • All-Americans: DE Brian Orakpo (unanimous), QB Colt McCoy

That 2008 Texas team was really great.  Without a doubt, better than the 2009 team that played for the NC against Alabama.

Strange things happen on the High Plains of Texas in the Fall.

I don't think either team would run on the other.  Florida averaged 400+ yards passing per game and spread the wealth to 3 main targets.  Looking at UT's team, you double Shipley and they'll.....what?

I'd predict Texas would pick off Grossman a couple of times, but Florida would still win.

Throw to the guy who led the team in yards and catches, probably.

Just looking at old numbers, I think the UF defense was better. Offense was also crazy explosive. That UF team would've had the best yards per play numbers in 2008. That's unreal.

Ah, hell.  I was looking at 2009 Texas.

Yeah, 01 Florida gained 50 more yards per game than 08 Texas AND allowed 50 yards less per game.  I think people see the 2 losses and dont think much of the 2001 Gators.  But it was easily Spurrier's most productive passing team, with a defense that allowed under 300 yds per game.  If not for a freak run D lapse vs Tennessee, they'd have faced the Canes for the NC.  They were above and beyond better than Nebraska, Oregon, or CU that year.
I understand picking 08 Texas, as they were 1 play from a NC shot, but sorry, that was the Big XII.  And titanic-offense OU was held to 14 points in the NCG that year.

The dwelling on that stat will amuse me in perpetuity.

But your offense only scored 24 on them, whilst Texas scored 45 on them. Florida and Texas each had the same MOV over the Sooners that year.

I think 2008 Texas was the best team in the country that year.  If not for one really bad quarter in Lubbock, they'd have won the NC.  My opinion, obviously.  Regardless, the 2008 Texas team was definitely better than the 2009 Texas team, which actually played for the NC.

the Canes would have beat them down like they did Nebraska
and I think the Huskers would have had a great chance vs the gators that season - their last two games were not good, but that wasn't a bad team

Yeah and if Chris Simms hadn't melted down with 3 INTs including 2 pick-6 in the B12 CCG against Colorado, then it likely would have been Texas getting beat down by Miami.

So many what-ifs and near-misses at the end of that year, it was crazy.
