  • Beat #17 USC (by 13), #3 Texas (by 21) and #6 Colorado (by 28) in consecutive weeks in October
  • Led nation in scoring and total offense, set the NCAA record for rushing offense
  • Lone loss came on Thanksgiving weekend to #1 Nebraska, 35-31, in the first Game of the Century in 5 years, losing with 1:38 left
  • Beat #5 Auburn 40-22 in Sugar Bowl
  • S&P+ #8 team of the 70s/80s
  • All-Americans: RB Greg Pruitt (consensus), OC Tom Brahaney (consensus), QB Jack Mildren, OG Ken Jones, LB Steve Aycock


1980 Nebraska (10-2)
  • Won at #3 Penn State, but lost at home to #16 Florida State in non-conference play
  • Lost at home in the season finale to Oklahoma, to lose the Big 8 title
  • Beat #17 Mississippi State in the Sun Bowl
  • SP+ #7 team of the 70s/80s

some younger folks just have no idear how great that 71 sooner team was

S&P says that would be 1959 Ole Miss, at least as of 2016.  1971 Oklahoma as the 12th best non-undefeated team of all time

hard to imagine a team on that list that could stand put against the 71 sooners on either side of the ball
