  • Major re-alignment began, with Nebraska joining the Big Ten; Colorado and Utah joining the Pac 12; BYU going independent; the ACC announcing Pitt and Syracuse would join; the SEC announcing that Texas A&M and Missouri would join; and the Big XII announcing West Virginia would join
  • Texas and ESPN launched the Longhorn Network
  • Ohio State, Penn State, North Carolina and Miami all faced NCAA penalties
  • On October 22, multiple NCAA records were tied or broken (coaching wins by Penn State's Joe Paterno; total offense by Houston's Case Keenum; career wins by a starting QB by Boise State's Kellen Moore; and consecutive completions by East Carolina's Dominique Davis)
  • Keenum later set career passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions records
  • Kentucky beat Tennessee 10-7, to end the FBS' longest losing streak against an opponent at 26
  • Joe Paterno, Jim Tressell and Bobby Petrino were fired; Howard Schnellenberger retired

Tattogate, the mess at Penn State, and the stupidest national title game.  2011 can die in a fire.
