OTHER NOTES
2000
  • QBs outside the tackle box were now allowed to intentionally ground the ball without penalty, if it passed the line of scrimmage
  • South Carolina opened the season by beating New Mexico State, to end a 21 game losing streak, the longest ever for an SEC team, and the longest by any power conference team since 1982, 4th longest ever.  They then upset #10 Georgia, to get off to a 7-1 start and reaching #17 in the polls, going from 0-11 to 8-4 and a Top 20 final ranking
  • BCS selecting Florida State over Miami and Washington led to the future addition of the Quality Win portion
  • Big West stopped sponsoring football after the season
2001
  • Florida was preseason AP #1, after finishing #10 in 2000, being the only team to date, since 1998 to be preseason #1 after finishing outside the top 6 the prior season, and one of 3 to be outside the final 4
  • Joe Paterno passed Bear Bryant in career wins with a 29-27 win over Ohio State on October 27
  • Antwan Randle-El became the first player to both throw and rush for 40 touchdowns in a career, and the first player to go over 2,500 scrimmage yards in four seasons
  • Crazy end to the season with BCS #1 Nebraska spoiling their undefeated season on the day after Thanksgiving, to fall out of the Big XII title game, and seemingly the BCS title game, but... then
  • Oklahoma lost to Oklahoma State later that day to also fall out of both the Big XII title game and BCS contention
  • New #2 Florida lost the following week to Tennessee in a makeup game lost to September 11 to fall out of the SEC title game
  • After beating Florida new #2 Tennessee just had to beat LSU in the SEC title game, but lost, opening the door for #3 Texas if they won the Big XII Championship game
  • Texas then lost to Colorado, who then rose to #2 in the polls, but stayed behind Nebraska in the BCS rankings

  • First time since joining the conference that Florida State didn't win the ACC, with Maryland winning instead
  • Nebraska finished #2 in the BCS, despite finishing #4 in the polls, and not playing for their conference championship
  • Rose Bowl did not feature a Big 10-Pac 8/10 matchup for the first time since USC played Alabama in 1946, and didn't include any Pac 8/10 team for the first time since World War I
  • Larry Coker became the first coach since Dennis Erickson in 1989, also at Miami, to win a national title in his first year at a school, and is to date still the most recent

2001 was a pile of mediocrity behind Miami, but that finish was really fun.  2000 was cool to see Oklahoma be good in something other than old films.  My college football history went back to 1990, and the Sooners had never been good.  But I was told they were a helmet.  That was the first time I got to actually see it.

Shouldn't take much sleuthing to figure out why I prefer 2000...

Not a fan of 2001.

Y2K for me.

The year started off great. The water worked, the power was still on, the nukes didn't go off, and the Badgers won the Rose Bowl.
