This is a hell of a matchup.  The numbers don't love that Miami team as much as I would have guessed though

Sexy matchup!

It looks good on your resume to have your sole loss vs the possible best team ever.
BUUUUUUT...this Miami era was incapable of losing to OU, lol.

Actually, this great Miami D's strength was pass D.  '71 OU could just avoid passing.

Not only did OU set NCAA record for team rushing yards per game,  that # needs publishing here.

472 yards per game!

I don't think there's been a 400 yard per game average this century.    Nebraska may have scraped out 401 in '97.    I've played that 71 OU team a bunch in OAM's game a ton,  they are a juggernaut.

the 71 Boomers would have put up 500 yards rushing and hung half a hundred on the scoreboard vs the 86 Canes

Well, Miami held '86 OU to 280 yds under their rushing average.
It'd be a funny game, with Miami possibly not rushing for any yardage and OU not having any passing yardage.

86 OU couldn't hold 71 OU's jock

but, it would be a fun game

I watched too many that weren't fun, with the Huskers not being able to run and the Canes being able to pass

the 2-point conv Orange bowl following the 83 season was fun. until it wasn't

That resume is tough to match, I think, in the "modern era", maybe 95 Nebbie.

They pretty much hammered 3, 5, 6, and 17.  That was the year the top 3 came from one conference.

Most people on this board have told me this can't be the case....

Obviously, it CAN be, it's very very rare.  So, we don't expect it.  Folks here are smart enough to understand it COULD happen.

Imagine this coming season for example, Bama finishes 13-0, UGA loses to them late (duh) and is 12-1, and A&M is 11-1 with a close lose at Bama and blow outs.

Other teams have two losses, or lose in a bowl game.

86 OU couldn't hold 71 OU's jock

An easy claim, but we don't KNOW that.
86 OU had the talent - they were preseason #1.
86 OU beat the hell out of their Orange Bowl opponent (#9 Ark).
The case against OU is that their loss was to JUST the overwhelming favorite in the year-ending 1 vs 2 game in which #1 happened to lose.  If Miami had beaten Penn State, 86 OU's resume would be similar to 71 OU's, partially due to 86 Miami being held in all-time great esteem.
.
Vinny Testaverde throwing a bunch of INTs vs someone else makes it so 86 OU doesn't measure up to 71 OU.
