I don't know any, I don't listen to country music from this decade.  That's your area of expertise.

You are a country music fan adamantly insisting that there is a lot of great modern music, but you don't like any country music from this decade?

Did you swallow mercury when you were a child?

Maybe.  My parents lost track of me for about 4 months when I was 3 or 4.  Anything is possible.

Back in the good ol days folks all had a favorite radio station and were on top of the latest music.

Most folks over25 dont do that today.  If they have a radio on its to listen to a talk or sports show not to the latest top ten

Thats why I kind of agree with Utee on this.  Most of our music likes and dislikes were formed back in the good ol days and not today.
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

Hmm...I'd have to really think to come up with "obscure" since most of the stuff I like, diverse though it may be, was mostly fairly well known or popular at some point.

Only thing that comes to mind right now is Mutemath, a band from New Orleans I saw several times in Austin.  I liked a couple of songs in particular off their first album, but it just barely makes utee's added rule for the last 20 years.  I think this came out in 2006.

The other song I liked best from that album, "Chaos," which pretty accurately described their live shows.  The place was a mess by the time they were done.  Never saw a band move around so much, so constantly.  Can't imagine how many calories they burned.  First time I saw them was at Stubbs BBQ and the drummer came out on stage and began duct taping his headphones to his head in multiple layers.  I was like "WTH?" and then when he started playing, I understood.  The guy thrashed about like a fox being electrocuted.....but damn, could he play.  The lead singer was quite a good keyboardist, he just had a propensity to jump around like a cocained monkey and start doing one-armed handstands on his own keyboard while playing with the other hand.  It was impressive as hell.  They pretty much ruined all their equipment every show.  I always figured they made 0 money because every penny from a show had to go to replacing all the instruments they damaged and lights they broke.  Plus whatever they owed the club owner for tearing up the place.

I like their sound and vibe.  Good obscure find, indeed!

I first heard Last Dinner Party with this (NSFW) song:

And Mutemath, this is the only one I knew... I'll check out the others.

Yeah I think "Nothing Matters" is TLDP's biggest hit.  I opted for a different one for the NSFW purposes, plus I just like "Sinner" better.

The subjectiveness of "obscure" makes this quite interesting. As a stress test, the first band I think of is Wilco. To some here, obscure / never heard of 'em! To others, very prominent.

Anyway, let's start with two from Dr. Dog.

I "think" this is a top 5 song for me:

Their second biggest song, and it's a cover:

I suppose I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that SFIrish has recorded a bunch of music, mostly down in Austin, which I hear sucks and you shouldn't go there.

If you're into 1990s girls with guitars (not riot girl; Sarah McLachlan, Mary Chapin Carpenter), you would probably like it. A few of her more popular songs (amongst her fans--she's never been popular out there in the world):
I Bet She (this one got radio play for about a second out here):

Angelina (this one made her a hit around campus back in college):

Beautiful Old Friend (later in life stuff):

Can't Kiss Me Casually:

One of my favorites, about serving overseas, Land of the Morning Calm:

And her cover of Like a Prayer, which I like:

Yeah, the chorus lyrics really take a left turn, don't they?

My high school daughter listens to pretty much everything, from oldies to brand new stuff, from pop to rock to country to hip hop to show tunes.

If I had to name one specific genre of new music she plays more than any other, I'd say she tends toward what they call "indie pop" or "bedroom rock"  and sometimes "lo-fi."  It's hard for me to describe the sound, but it seems to me to be somewhat of a stylistic successor to what I called in the 90s, "dream rock."  Mazzy Star was a favorite of mine and is an example of that kind of music.

And although that's one of her favorite styles, it was actually me that introduced her to it probably 7 or 8 years ago when I was searching for some new music and stumbled over this track.
