OT: Introduce Some Obscure Musical Artists
« on: January 22, 2026, 02:22:54 PM »
So the discussion from @MikeDeTiger in the Grumpy thread got me thinking... He said that there might be some good modern music out there, but he's not really coming across it. Which makes sense... Finding new good music other than what's on mainstream radio can be difficult. And even moreso if you only listen to classic rock stations :57:

So I thought that maybe a thread to introduce artists you like that are less well known might be fun.

"Obscure" is whatever you want it to be, BTW. It doesn't mean they've never charted. There's no objective criteria.

That said, my first post is going to be something that's quite obscure...

But feel free to have fun with it.

This band is called Out For Hours. They're a band that might be classified in the range of rock to light rock, maybe alternative... They only have 3 full albums available on Spotify. But it's pretty melodic, solid vocals, and overall a good listen. I'm not sure they're doing much any more--the last single was 2017. So they definitely are obscure...

I found out about them because the guitarist was one of my fraternity brothers... But they're pretty good.

Here's one off their debut album:

Good idea for a thread.  Should be a pretty broad range of potential candidates since anything released after 1982 is going to be "obscure" to most of these old fuddy duddies.

Given the loose constraints on thread topic, I don't think my particular aim here is going to be to focus on "obscure" music so much as "new music that is good or at least interesting."

And for this crowd I'm going to call pretty much anything in the last 20 years, "new music."

But my first entry will actually be a pretty new band, only 5 years old or so, and in the "indie rock" subgenre.

This song is very theatrical, it could almost be from a Broadway musical rock opera kind of show.  It's also an all-girl band.  Theyre called "The Last Dinner Party."  Check it out, if you dare.

Feels a bit like a reboot of Sleater-Kinney.

I know it's not off the beaten path for Gen-Z, but I enjoy IDKHow (I Don't Know How But They Found Me):

Last Dinner Party is good (some sniff that they are purposefully curated 'super indy band').  'This is the Killer Speaking' is my favorite track
