I get a pedicure every two weeks, and they apply matte clear polish to my nails.

My company is on the "unlimited PTO" vacation plan. So I just got my report.

My company is on the "unlimited PTO" vacation plan. So I just got my report.

In the past 6 months, I've taken 1 vacation day, and 3 bereavement days.

That's it. And so far, I only have 1 day requested for the rest of the year--although I'll probably add a few when we head to NorCal for parent's weekend at Berkeley.

With our old system, and my years of service, I think I'd be accruing about 20 vacation days per year, if not more.

I need to get out more.
Bbbbbut....capitalism bad.  Well, except for the part where you don't even take the time off they've given you.

I get about 216 hrs per year, after 20+ years of service.  I scatter them around, a day here and there, one week in the summer, and a bunch around X-Max and Thanksgiving.  Usually carry over a few.

I'm just thankful they are matte clear polish and not the glossy clear polish

How's that work?

Here, we start off accruing one sick day and one vacation day per month (technically, 8 hrs), though sick time can be taken for whatever, because you don't turn anything in saying you were at a medical appointment.  So you can use it like vacation.  Or you can use vacation days if you're sick (I had to do that when I blew out my sick time for abdominal surgery and still needed days off).  Starting off at 12 days off per year is pretty good, I thought.  In a couple months, my accrual goes up to 9 hrs per month, which amounts to a little over an extra day off per year.

I work with some people who have 20+ years here and they're at 16 hrs per month (2 days).  They rack it up.
Are you technically hourly or salaried? Not that it makes a difference for what I'm about to talk about, but IMHO accruing PTO is a lot different when you're hourly than salaried. I don't have to count any hours.

I think the "unlimited PTO" thing is generally a thing for larger publicly-traded companies. Accrued and unused PTO sits on the books as a financial liability. Which gums things up when it comes to reporting financial results. So they've moved to this kind of system. As long as you and your manager are happy, it's unlimited.

But in practice, it probably results in people taking less, not more.

No. It was my mom's funeral.

But thank you. That joke was funny. I'm slapping my knee as we speak.

I was feeling off last night, beginnings of a sore throat, now it's raging, typical early symptoms of a cold, but I feel pretty poorly at the moment.

I slept on the sofa so as to keep my wife away from any bugs.

My back went out before last Christmas and never got totally right this time.  It was pretty slight and I wasn't thinking anything of it until I had a rental car for a couple of weeks recently.  That seems to have aggravated it again quite a bit.  Since 2019 when I first put my back out, it's happened every now and then, and while it's bad, it usually is completely better within a few weeks.  Not this time.

X-rays show I have moderate straightening of the L-spine.  I'm probably in for a lifetime of this.
