I need to find a place to donate my daughter's books

If you have bulk donating to do, this is more of an East Coast program, but I recommend Better World Books if you're near one of their Drop Boxes. When I lived in Washington DC a decade ago, they worked with two libraries I heavily frequented to collect book donations, recirculate books into library catalogues, raise money on donated book sales for literacy non-profits, and donate used textbooks to specific university departments.

I just finished this. It was very interesting and an easy read. A lot of these types of books can get bogged down in technical discussions but this had a nice narrative flow.

Sort of related but I'm in the midst of building another wall-to-wall, floor to ceiling library wall, in our front room, aka "the parlor" or "the drinking room" and now it is also "the Vinyl Lounge."  This one will have a few books but mostly the shelves are for displaying various assorted keepsakes and knickknacks, some of them acquired during our travels.  Really the whole point is to make it look a lot more like a cozy library lounge, reminiscent of a smoking parlor although of course I despise smoking so there's no way that'll be going on in there.  But my wife did recently thrift a vintage crystal ash tray for the room.  Turns out ash trays are super-cheap these days.

It's a bit of an "Ikea hack" because I'm starting with two of their bookshelves, but at this point I've constructed more of it myself, than was present pre-fabbed.  All the construction is complete, this weekend will be paint and stain, next week will be trim and hardware, and it should be ready before the end of February.  I'm racing against time to make sure it's complete before my i s c & a aggie wife's bday on 3/28, she wants to have a big party this year.

[/img]I grew up with this bookshelf. My grandfather made it.  It is about 10 feet long. We grandparents died i inherited it.  When I got read of most of my life books I gave it to my daughter.  This is right after she did some restoration.  It is over 65 years old since I always remember it being at my grandparents house. Daughter takes after me in her love of books. She moving right now and has a ridiculous number of boxes of books

I love building stuff.  Ever since I sold the Airstream, I've had to occupy myself with small projects.  It's been a while since I tackled an entire room.

The Ikea bookshelves are going to get paint along one side, to match the wall color.  The outsides will be up against the wall on either side.  The faux face frames (basically just trim tacked onto the front stiles of the existing bookshelves to make them look thicker) will also be painted to match the wall color, as will all other trim including base and crown molding.  The shelves themselves will be left their natural "wood" color, which in this case is walnut "veneer."  But it actually looks pretty nice.

But that just constitutes the two towers of bookshelves on each end of the wall.  In between, I built four more bookshelves to span across the top of the two towers.  There is a blank space below, where the piano will go, which I'm going to be fetching from my parents' house in a couple of weeks.  The custom cabinets that span the top, I built out of inexpensive 1x12 whitewood.  It'll be stained "special walnut" to match the Ikea cabinetry, and I've already done samples and the color matches very nicely.  That whitewood will get sanded to 220 but no further, then pre-treated since it's softwood, then stained, then I'll brush on a spar urethane topcoat in satin.  It'll match the Ikea coloration pretty well in both color and sheen, certainly close enough once all the trim is added and the shelves are loaded.

Then each vertical set of shelves will get a bookcase picture light at the top, and I'm probably going to run LED strips in each cubby of the bookshelves.  The shelves themselves don't have a lip so I'll have to either install one at the front to hide the LED strips, or build a small channel at the back to hide them.  Haven't decided yet whether I want to front-light or back-light them.

Yup I'll post some up when it's finished.  Should be by the end of Feb, but I have a cushion until the end of March.

Do you guys try to keep ALL your books? 

I mean, one of the reasons that I like using the Kindle is that for most fiction, I'm never going to re-read it. If I was buying those books in paper versions, it would just be something that I would eventually find a way to get rid of. Partly because this house just does NOT have anywhere near enough space... But also partly because I'm not a hoarder. 

For me to actually buy a physical book means that it's a book that I value the content enough that I won't get rid of it. But that's a much smaller selection of books than everything I read. 

And as we keep accumulating books, we are constantly in that decision-making process of "is there anything we have kept for a while, that perhaps over time we realized we just don't care and we can get rid of it?" There have been more than a few of those over the years now.
