Yup they were definitely popular, just not my cup o' tea.  And it has nothing to do with their politics, I'm very much on record as not giving a crap one way or the other how entertainers lean or speak politically.  I disliked them long before any of that happened.

A good friend of mine helped me gain some clarity once upon a time.  He doesn't like Rush, can't stand Geddy Lee's voice mostly, but also he just doesn't dig prog rock in general.  But he really liked the Dixie Chicks, and he once asked me why I didn't, and I responded, "They're my Rush."

Sometimes you just don't like something that a lot of other people do.  I don't like Michelob Ultra either, but it's the top selling beer in the country.

Most of the country I listened to was as a result of the girl I was dating at the time, which, unsurprisingly, tended to include "the gals." That was long over by the time the Chicks were on the scene, but SFIrish appreciates them and, to some degree, Shania, so they've hung around the playlists I hear.
