Add HBO and Cinemax to cable TV.  Maybe even Nickelodeon and USA Network for people of a certain age.  All were very influential in reinforcing the culture in their own ways.

And the clothes and hairstyles and cars.  You could argue whether they were independent or just an effect of the various other aspects you've highlighted, but regardless they were unique and important within the era.

  • Appearing nowhere in these movies: the AIDS epidemic (Beverly Hills Cop gets close...ish in the country club lunch scene)
  • Rebellion against the old and boring (this probably fits for every generation: in the 80s it was rebelling against the staid Greatest Generation).

What am I missing or what do I have wrong?

On a serious note, I'll add this, which I think is similarly impactful to other elements you listed.  That being the rise of evangelicalism within the American church.  That was around before the 80's, but arguably the 80's is when it really became dominant enough to begin swapping places with traditional Protestantism ("mainline" denominations), and it coincides with the decline of the mainlines since, and also a temporary decline in Roman Catholocism.  There's a lot of ethos that spills over from that into the broader 80's zeitgeist, but I'll not say more.

Yes, I 100% agree. Closely related to other social issues of the time, but distinct--a cultural moment of its own.

And yeah, gimme a little Jimmy Swaggart and the Church Lady (as far as the cultural zeitgeist), and I know you're in the 80s.

You see, even though we’re from all over the country, with different backgrounds and cultures, we have this shared experience of what it was like growing up in the 80’s. 

If you say “isn’t that special to a Gen X, we almost immediately imagine Dana Carvey and the church lady scene. 

I tell my kids that and they give me confused dog look.

Growing up in Baton Rouge, as I recall, Jimmy Swaggart also said "gimme a little church lady."  Or some ladies who didn't go to church.  I don't think he discriminated.

Well Jerry Lee Lewis is one of his cousins, so if Jimmy Swaggart was up to some philandering, he might have even been related to the girl...
