best 70s movie ever!
I've literally never heard of it, and never seen it.  Never hear about it.  It has zero staying power.

BTW, it seems like our voting is maxed out about 15 votes per thread.  Not sure how many daily active posters we have, and to that end how many care to vote, but I'll give the Atari Region another day or two to see who straggles in Monday and we'll move on to the next round.

I'd vote if I'd seen both movies and had an opinion.
Probably happen in the later rounds

North Dallas 40 is great.  The book by Peter Gent even better than the movie.

I went ahead and unpinned the ones that were runaways.  Left the ones that were pretty close, or tied.

OK so if, in the interest of preserving board space,  we were to limit it to only 4 matchups per voting round, and allow 2 business days per voting round, it would stretch into the second week of September, looking something like this:

8/3-8/4: Region 2 first 4 matchups
8/5-8/6: Region 2 second 4 matchups
8/7-8/10: Region 3 first 4 matchups
8/11-8/12: Region 3 second 4 mathups
8/13-8/14: Region 4 first 4 matchups
8/17-8/18: Region 4 second 4 matchups
8/19-8/20: Region 1 Quarterfinals 4 matchups
8/21-8/24: Region 2 Quarterfinals 4 matchups
8/25-8/26: Region 3 Quarterfinals 4 mathups
8/27-8/28: Region 4 Quarterfinals 4 matchups
8/31-9/1: Region 1 and 2 Semifinals 4 matchups
9/2-9/3: Region 3 and 4 Semifinals 4 matchups
9/4-9/7: All regional finals 4 matchups
9/8-9/9: Final 4 Semifinals 2 matchups
9/10-9/11: Final matchup

Alternatively if we allow 8 active voting threads at a time it would wrap up a couple days before the first college football weekend and look like this:

8/3-8/4: Region 2 all matchups (8)
8/5-8/6: Region 3 all matchups (8)
8/7-8/10: Region 4 all matchups (8)
8/11-8/12: Region 1 and 2 Quarterfinals (8)
8/13-8/14: Region 3 and 4 Quarterfinals (8)
8/17-8/18: Region 1,2,3,4 Semifinals (8)
8/19-8/20: All region finals (4)
8/21-8/24: Final 4 Semifinals (2)
8/25-8/26: Final matchup (1)

So... this is going to take a while regardless.  Just depends on how grumpy all the old folks are about having 8 simulataneous active voting threads between now and 8/18.

In thinking through this (way more than I should), I was trying to come up with cultural touchstones of the 80s, i.e. the markers of the time. Here's a list I put together:

  • Materialism/consumerism and the Valley or Material Girl
  • Reaganism: strong endorsement of capitalism, and the government/bureaucracy as the enemy
  • The cold war and nuclear annihilation
  • The Vietnam hangover and far off wars and terrorism in the Middle East
  • Changing gender roles and the sexual revolution: women moving into corporate roles and traditionally blue collar men's jobs, and teen sex becoming an accepted norm
  • Divorce and absentee parenting
  • Affirmative action and changing race relations
  • Drugs and the "Drug War," particularly cocaine
  • Consumer electronics and the rise of the computer (and the mobile phone towards the end of the 80s)
  • Japanese business acumen and the dying "Rust Belt" / shrinking middle class
  • Synth pop, rap, hair bands, and peak Michael Jackson / Prince
  • Later in the 80s: the rise of emo and the disaffected Gen X
  • Cable TV: CNN and MTV
  • Appearing nowhere in these movies: the AIDS epidemic (Beverly Hills Cop gets close...ish in the country club lunch scene)
  • Rebellion against the old and boring (this probably fits for every generation: in the 80s it was rebelling against the staid Greatest Generation).

What am I missing or what do I have wrong?
