I mean, Empire Strikes Back is absolutely one of the greatest movies of the 80s, but I don't really consider it to be an 80s movie.  Any more than I consider original Star Wars to be a 70s movie.  Just happens to be when it came out.

When Harry Met Sally, on the other hand, might be one of the most quintessential 80s movies there is.  The clothes, the hairstyles, the settings, the Sharper Image, the WAVE at a football game...

@Gigem best way to do this is to open individual voting threads. Gonna be crazy to try to tabulate the votes via copy and paste and then when we all start arguing over shit...

First of all, I'm so not trying to shit all over your thing. This is a major undertaking and blowback is inevitable.

That said, what in that actual fuck? Breakfast Club isn't the #1 seed overall seed? Sixteen Candles isn't even in the field??? St. Elmo's Fire??? Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is listed twice. What makes Christmas Vacation (which I love!) an 80's movie, much less a #1 seed? Mannequin not in the field? Doesn't John Hughes own 2-3 of the 4 #1 seeds by default?

Again, not trying to be mean, but dude...

FYI, I just asked my 100% Gen-X SIL to name the top 4 *most 80's* movies off the top of her head:

#1 Breakfast Club
#2 Ferris Bueller's Day Off
#3 Pretty in Pink
#4 Sixteen Candles

I mentioned Top Gun, Back to the Future, and St. Elmo's Fire.


She said, "oh yeah, replace Sixteen Candles with St. Elmo's Fire."

Pretty in Pink is sort of a poor man's version of... well... everything.  I didn't love it but it's definitely 80s.

St. Elmo's Fire is like a darker movie version of the TV show Friends but ten years earlier.  Also not the greatest movie but iconic for the Brat Pack and a totally awesome 80s soundtrack.

I'd take Some Kind of Wonderful over both of them.

100%. I watched St. Elmo's Fire with my wife, maybe a year ago. I laughed at how bad it was. But is was quintessential Brat Pack. Sixteen Candles >>> Pretty in Pink.

But in a 64-team field, you almost have to put every Brat Pack movie in.

Agree across the board.  

I think Breakfast Club is the best of all of them and as an 80s teen who was very close in age to the teens in the movie, it might end up being my pick to win it all.  It was just an incredible cultural touchstone.  And I watched it recently with my own teens and they really liked it and found it to be relevant even now 40 years later.

If we're going to include HBO/Cinemax relevance, then I'd have to toss in Krull and Beastmaster.  I don't think there was a Saturday evening between 1983 and 1987 that didn't feature one or both on HBO or Cinemax.
