Minnesota (0-2, 2-3) at #12 Michigan (2-0, 4-1) Post Game
« on: September 23, 2024, 04:42:06 PM »
Noon kickoff.

Sherrone Moore says Alex Orji is QB1 going forward, he also said that Kalel Mullings has proven he should be "the guy" at RB (sorry Dono).

Michigan is an 8.5 pt favorite and the O/U is 38.5.

Michigan coming off a huge gut check 4th QTR win vs #13 USC, Minnesota coming off a beat down at home at the hands of Iowa. Also kinda wild that Minnesota lost to UNC at home considering UNC just got 70 hung on them by James Madison at home and lost by 20 points.

Call me crazy and I'm not a betting man, but that line looks low.

well it is always hard to predict how 18-22 year olds (or in Utah, Okie State, or Miami's case 30 year old QB's and TE's) will perform week to week- and Michigan is coming off the sugar high of a big win at home vs a top 15 ranked team and Minnesota is kind of licking their wounds after being hammered at home by Iowa. Minnesota could just come out swinging saying we can't let that happen again and Michigan could just come out lackadaisical going through the motions....it happens.

Michigan also has zero passing game and Vegas is going to bake that into all their Michigan lines, as less passing typically = less scoring.

Minny is pretty limited offensively. But so is Michigan.

offense? what is this offense you speak of?

I feel like this would be a good week to give Oriji some work in the pass game and maybe experiment with Donovan Edwards at WR. I’m all for turning DE into a Curtis Samuel/Percy Harvin type hybrid. I firmly believe that is his best and highest use and his skill set fits that mold far more than it does an in between the tackles every down running back.

Edwards just doesn’t read the gaps and cut back lanes like an elite RB should and his running style is more finesse and speed than it is run through a motherfuckers face. Edwards doesn’t have great contact balance and he goes down way too easily, he’s just not big and strong enough to run through tackles and break them.

I can definitely see Michigan pulling the Iowa a few times this season where the defense scores more than the offense. I could definitely see that in this game. Minny gave up a bunch of rushing yards to Iowa, but has otherwise been pretty stout defensively. Could we see these teams combine for fewer than 100 yards passing?

This exactly. When he's in the open field, he's dynamic, but he really doesn't understand the gaps and lanes, at all. It's been even more noticeable after watching Mullings, who surprisingly reads them very well.

I hope that Michigan can get some big plays going in the passing game but not counting on it.

If Minnesota is able to pass the ball it’ll be because of miscommunications between the CB and safeties and blown coverages by Makari Paige. That was a real problem that reared it’s ugly head vs USC.

If Makari Paige has another game as awful as he played vs USC might be time for him to hit the bench. Which is crazy because he’s been a really good player the past couple seasons. I think not having Rod Moore at free safety back there playing center fielder and being the QB of the defense and calling all the coverages and getting players lined up is really hurting them. That injury to Rod Moore was probably the one injury they couldn’t afford other than Will Johnson.

it’s not that surprising that Mullings can read them when you think about it….he played LB’er for so long at both HS and college level. He understands defensive fronts and run fits and how defenses attack gaps- he has an idea where the LB’s/Safeties will flow. He just reads it perfectly. Edwards? Even on lot of his big runs he’s running straight ahead into his OL then bouncing off them and breaking it outside for a big gain. If the play isn’t designed specifically for a specific gap and blocked perfectly, Edwards isn’t getting more than 1 or 2 yards.

If the Michigan OC is competent, he's going to feed the Gophers a steady diet of counters, trap, and misdirection that gets the defensive front going the wrong way. That's what Iowa killed them with in the second half, and that's what I'm expecting lots of Saturday.

Gopher offense? Puhlease. PJ goes turtle in spots like this, taking no risks as a gigantic underdog.

Yours truly will be in AA on Saturday, so if anyone else is there shoot me a PM and I'll try to say hi.
