There are at least two Big Ten universities without mascots, Indiana, and Illinois. Are there others?
Wikipedia says Indiana had mascots: A bulldog from 1959-65. A bison in the late 1960s. And "Hoosier Pride" in 1979 (looks a bit like the Mascots of UNL).
The "Fightin' Illini" refers to doughboys who came back from World War I. Until the other thread went up about Illinois traditions being lost, I thought "Fightin' Illini referred to native Americans once living in Illinois.
I suggest a rail splitter for Illinois, since this was Lincoln's job as a young man. But I believe he learned to use an axe on the farm in Indiana where Lincoln was raised. Any other ideas?
