Mascot suggestions for Big Ten Schools without mascots (OT)
« on: August 26, 2017, 08:34:23 PM »
There are at least two Big Ten universities without mascots, Indiana, and Illinois. Are there others?

Wikipedia says Indiana had mascots: A bulldog from 1959-65. A bison in the late 1960s. And "Hoosier Pride" in 1979 (looks a bit like the Mascots of UNL).

The "Fightin' Illini" refers to doughboys who came back from World War I. Until the other thread went up about Illinois traditions being lost, I thought "Fightin' Illini referred to native Americans once living in Illinois.

I suggest a rail splitter for Illinois, since this was Lincoln's job as a young man. But I believe he learned to use an axe on the farm in Indiana where Lincoln was raised. Any other ideas?

I hadn't thought of looking for inspiration to Sesame Street.

Brutus does not look so brutiful to me. Cookie Monster might be an improvement over Brutus Buckeye.

I rather like the idea of Illinois having a doughboy mascot.  That would be cool, and it would fit nicely with the war memorial stadium.

I feel like a military mascot would be a touchy subject.  Obviously it would need to be treated with respect, not some goofy mascot clowning around on the sidelines.  So is it a mascot?  Is it a symbol?  We already had a symbol that we only saw for for a few minutes at halftime.

I honestly don't know how the current military mascots are portrayed at other schools.

I am fine with not ever having a mascot at Illinois.  We never had one and we don't need one now.  I did not consider the Chief to be a mascot although I get that probably many did.

I do feel like this Illinois administration is at some point going to try to force a mascot down our throat to try to get away from people still yelling for the Chief.  But it's been 10 years already, why now?

Railsplitters was almost what Purdue went by before they settled upon Boilermakers.

A railsplitter mascot would look too much like Purdue Pete, walking around with a sledge hammer.

I see the doughboy in a realistic WWI uniform, not some stuffed animal looking mascot.  Similar to WVU's mountaineer, but with class.

Has it really been 10 years since they gave the Chief the boot?  Time flies.

RISD's Mascot was, is, and always will be the funniest mascot ever concocted.
