It sucks for the same reason any big city sucks. Lots of shitty people doing lots of shitty things.

Now the parks around Las Vegas are excellent.  I really like Valley of Fire State Park, about a 45 minute drive NE of Vegas.

Valley of Fire connects Lake Mead National Park with the sprawling Moapa River Indian reservation, all of which combine to form an impenetrable wall that prevents them from expanding too far in this direction.

Vegas has some great golf courses, but over priced

I liked Las Vegas a lot more in the late 2000s than I did the last time I was there in 2014.

And yes, once you get away from the Strip and downtown it's a dirty city that feels like it could get blown away at any time.

This fits my experience of the contrast between the dazzling Strip and the rest of the city limits. There’s really no place in the world quite like the Las Vegas Strip, from the Mandalay Bay at the south end to the Wynn towers north, and all Casinos between. If you can’t appreciate the spectacle of the Strip on an evening stroll, check into one of those Fat Tuesday Daiquiri sidewalk shacks, buy yourselves a Tall Hurricane Slushy, and meander through the Caesar’s Forum Shops.

On flip side of fortunes, the several times I’ve had my vehicle worked on in North Las Vegas, driving north from the Fremont Street Casinos is a noticeable drop off of civilization. The homeless tents and their trash become so dense along the boulevards that the city operates scheduled caravans of street sweepers followed by police cruisers to confiscate all the drugs/paraphernalia turning up along the sidewalks.

Homeless encampments northward along Las Vegas BLDV:

The Sunrise Mountain road is just lined with trash, from couches to everything else.
