Pat Tyrance was a leading performer on the Blackshirt defenses of the late 80s.  He led the team in tackles in his junior and senior seasons, earning All Big 8 honors along the way.

I had the exact same question when I saw that photo.

When Bill Snyder started at Kansas State he intentionally changed their uniforms to look almost exactly like the Dallas Cowboys. In older pictures, the purple even looks blue.

But this game was played almost a decade before Bill Snyder took over at Kansas State, and as you note the only real question-mark uniform on their 1979 schedule was Kansas so... I guess it was the Jayhawks?

Digging more, I think it's a 1977 game against Duke



Duke wearing Cowboys uniforms probably really helped their fans out.  Wonder if they wore pinstripes at home

I think that's Duke from 1977.  Duke had an OT #74 named John Patterson.  Michigan also hosted Duke in 1978 but it rained pretty much the whole game, at least that's how I remember it.
