#17 Iowa (7-2, 10-2) at Nebraska (3-6, 5-7) Postgame
« on: November 20, 2023, 01:00:15 AM »
Nebraska is at home for the season finale and can become bowl eligible. Nebraska is looking to take two straight from the Hawkeyes. The betting line is Iowa with a 2-point advantage, and the over/under is 30.
The Hawkeyes offense seems to have improved a smidgen, although point totals do not support that improvement, mainly because Iowa hasn't had special teams or defensive touchdowns recently.
Iowa PF is 118, PA 99 (conference)
Neb. PF is 129, PA 145 (conference)
I think it will be a close one. Neb. has a better defense than Iowa's last two opponents, Northwestern and Illinois. Nebraska's offense is less competent than Northwestern, and Illinois.
The betting line suggests Iowa 16 - Neb. 14.
I don't know how Iowa gets to 16. I would say Nebraska better watch out for giving up a safety.

I'm thinking Nebraska can win this game since its fairly meaningless to the Hawkeyes, at home, and means becoming bowl eligible for the Huskers.  That would be pretty good for Rhule's first year.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969

Nebraska will have edge in motivation that is true.  Iowa has the Big Ten West clinched, so what does Iowa play for?

On the other hand, Nebraska has lost 3 games in a row,  struggled on offense and can be a turnover machine.  Will they even be able to score  on Phil Parker's defense?  Iowa's offense usually can squeak out one TD a game and that might be enough for Iowa to win.

Agree the game will be close,  but some teams like Iowa just find a way to win in the 4Q and some teams like Nebraska just find a way to lose

Iowa at 10-3 would get a pretty solid ranking in the polls and likely NY6 bowl, at 9-4 not so much, and of course I think the motivation part runs out as soon as toe meets leather usually.  It can impact game prep.

Iowa also does have revenge on its mind.  Nebraska did upset Iowa last year,  costing Iowa the West title in 2022.

But Nebraska also embarrassed Phil Parker's secondary last year.   Parker remembers this and I am sure he would like to completely shut down the Husker passing game this time.

I think Iowa would like to go into Indy on a high note, rather than limping in.

Does Iowa have a punchers chance in Indy? Sure, why not. They will play the game and there is always a chance - no matter how small that chance is.

Every team has some "chance", of course often the chance is so near zero we pay it no heed.  I think a great offense and lousy defense is more likely to upset a "Michigan" than the reverse.  I'd guess we'd be looking at a 17 point dog in that game, with a team not known for scoring much at all.

Nebraska and Iowa will meet Friday in Lincoln for the 13th annual Heroes Game, presented by Pioneer. As part of the rivalry game, citizen heroes were selected from each state, with Josh Hicks chosen as Nebraska's Hero and Eric Kumm selected as Iowa's Hero. Both recipients will be recognized Friday at Memorial Stadium.

The Heroes Game was created to honor the rich football traditions of the University of Iowa and the University of Nebraska football programs while also annually honoring community heroes in both states. The 2023 citizen heroes have positively impacted the community and stand as an inspiration to others.

Hicks, a Lincoln native, will be honored as the Nebraska Hero. An HVAC technician accustomed to heavy lifts was at the right place at the right time, as he played a pivotal role in rescuing and pulling a man from a van that tumbled off a highway into a lake near Wichita, Kansas this past July.

When asked by the Lincoln Journal Star if felt like what he did was heroic, Hicks responded by saying, “I had no idea who was in that van. Don’t care. Don’t know if they’re hurt, we’re just gonna go down there and check it out, make sure if anybody needs our help, we’re there,” he said. “There was no, ‘I’m gonna go out and be a hero and save some lives today.’”

Eric Kumm, a vocational agriculture teacher and FFA advisor since 1997 in the South O’Brien school district, has been an incredible influence on countless young minds. There are many kids in rural Iowa who found their love and passion for agriculture under his tutelage. Without his guidance, many small towns in Northwest Iowa would be without veterinarians, agronomists, welders, ag teachers, farmers and many other ag related jobs that students found their passion for under Eric.

“Pioneer is incredibly grateful to honor both Josh and Eric for their heroic and impactful efforts in our Midwest communities,” said Jeremy Renz, Pioneer US Marketing Director. For nearly 100 years, we’ve been helping and honoring farmers throughout the U.S. and we are excited to keep that tradition going by honoring local heroes that live and work in the communities we serve every day. This partnership is one small way we can express our sincere gratitude for those heroes.”

Hicks and Kumm will attend the game as special guests of the teams, receive on-field recognition at halftime, and have their names inscribed on the game trophy.

The Nebraska guy, Josh Hicks, went over and beyond the expectation for a lay person responding to an emergency. The description of his actions appear heroic.

I might regret this since it could end up being my team but:

IMHO, the gap between tOSU/M and Iowa is so large that the size of the gap is the biggest thing going FOR Iowa.

The tOSU/M game is so big that the winner is going to naturally feel like they are "done". Watching national pundits, everybody seems to more-or-less assume that the tOSU/M winner will be top-2 in the CFP. The pesky little B1GCG is a complete afterthought.

It will be difficult for the tOSU/M coaching staff to keep their team focused on Iowa.

Teams often overlook somebody with a big game coming up, but the disparity in this case is probably too much to overcome unless one side is +3 in TOs.
