A good friend of mine in Cincy is a Miami fan and was elated with Richt took over, couldn't understand why UGA fired him.  I told him IMHO Richt was only an "OK coach", not a great one at all.  He didn't believe me then, does now.  Miami could be in long term trouble.

The drastic change in offense at GaTech is somewhat interesting, but I suspect that is not going to go well either.  They cannot recruit at a level needed to run a standard offense, at all.

The Ryan Day experiment in Columbus should be interesting.  Urban Meyer is a tough act to follow.
Pfffft, says who?  :33:

I am not high on Manny Diaz.  I believe that it was at UT that they called him "Iaz," as in "no-D."  I did not think that his actions in leaving Temple and taking some of his players with him were honorable.  Because of that, and because he is going to Miami, I will view it as karmic when he fails.

It's interesting how coordinators get crystallized in our minds. Texas kind of had the same thing with Greg Davis, who built a bunch of effective offenses with Young and McCoy, and most people call him a dolt for his work in 2010 (the Iowa tenure didn't help).

His Miami defenses were 11th, 16th and 14th. He's got an interesting history, a lot of building decent defenses in not great places. In two years at Texas, he ha a 5th and a 43rd, and the defense he assembled but hardly coached was 23rd.

Unsure if the dishonorable thing matters. Crappy people win all the time in this game.

Richt is sort of fascinating and a good reminder of how quickly things change in college football.

A year ago he was a pretty solid success story. He got a second-year team with shoddy QB play to a No. 2 ranking, division title, Orange Bowl. Now he's gone, in part because he let love of family create some issues. It does speak to Miami's biggest issue. It'll always be playing against its history, without the backing of infrastructure.

The other interesting part is how it shows Georgia is a consumer of careers. Richt had a better record than Kirby through four years, granted in a less tough SEC. He won at a better rate than Dooley and most everyone else that coached there. But such is the aura around what Georgia can be, even the highly successful are simply "OK" rather than pretty good. Granted, that is to a degree the nature of college football, a sort of warped feeling on how coaches stack up.

I watched Richt get out coached often, too often, when there was a large talent advantage.  Spurrier of course was the main nemesis, which I could understand to an extent.

Another thing is his teams had all sorts of off season issues much less often encountered today.  I think he thought he could change people, and on occasion he did, but often he could not.  Smart is somehow recruiting even better than Richt was, which is tough to do.

We'll see if Smart can do something with all that talent, he has a lot right now.

I'd assume if I watched a guy coach for that long, I'd remember the out-coachings more vividly. It's also a factor the major of losses a competent UGA coach will have feel like out coachings.

I'm not saying he's the greatest, but just that he's pretty good, pretty successful. Probably not successful enough for UGA, but I wonder if that ever happens short of a title. (Also have to wonder if Kirby is keeping a better lid on things, but that might just be my mild distrust of the guy)

I’m more interested in Michigan St than I am going into most seasons. The Spartans are poised to have a monster year on defense and with Lewerke (underrated, IMO) hopefully healthy along with the offense all back the roster is in place to go toe to toe with anyone in conference. 5-0 should be the case going into the mid season stretch Vs Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Penn State; And I imagine Spartans wins against them will look like how Arizona State and Michigan beat the Spartans last year in ugly games.

My big reservation is the coaching staff. When it comes to experience and NFL potential MSU has a Top 10 roster. But a Top 10 roster won’t overcome a coaching staff as stale as Dantonio & Staff have been these past 3 seasons.

Not to mention, I’m very much looking forward to another mean spirited edition of who gets the Paul Bunyan Trophy.

Penn State +3 at MSU, and Wisconsin -2 against MSU in Madison seem like easy money

That's sort of how I feel.  Most talented MSU roster since at least 2014, and I just don't see the staff utilizing it right.  Granted a year where we go to Columbus and Ann Arbor, and have crossover ROAD games against Wisconsin and Northwestern, this isn't exactly a year where talent aligns with schedule, which is typically important for MSU.  Last year was their year to make a statement, and injuries and coaching derailed the whole thing badly.
