A thing I notice often on "the news" is some relatively minor rare event blown up into some massive threat to western civilization.

The case in point, these folks squatting in houses.  It's real, but it's minor, infrequent, rare, and yet it's presented as a major issue.

I see something about some trans person doing whatever almost daily as if it too is a major problem ruining women's sports.  It's real, but rare.

Then there is this WNBA player who is very good but signed for a lot less than NBA players, duh.  It gets blown way out of relevance in reality.

I could go on, "news" about EVs and how folks don't like them.  OK, some folks don't like them, film at 11.  Don't buy one.

Here is perhaps another example:

Supreme Court will take up the legal fight over ghost guns, firearms without serial numbers (cnbc.com)

I don't THINK "ghost guns" are often used to commit crimes.  These are "kit guns", not something your usual gang member would bother with.  Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's some significant causer of crime.

But, these serial numbers generally aren't registered anywhere, in most states, anyway.  If they find a gun at a crime scene, the serial number can't be tracked back to an individual except the original owner, if that, with few exceptions.  And of course, generally the shooter will not leave the weapon behind anyway except in TV shows.

But, you can't look up some serial number and know who owned it, with some exceptions.

you can find who sold it originally

not that it matters most of the time, but there could be a pattern and lead to something

Yes, with some effort, you can locate the FFL who originally sold it, and if their records are retained (20 year requirement), you can determine a name they sold it to.

You might even find that person.  If it was used to commit a crime, that original owner is likely to claim "I lost it", or "It was stolen", or even "I sold it to some dude.".

I think most guns used to commit crimes are either stolen or from straw purchases.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape accused Joe Biden of disparaging the South Pacific island nation by implying that an uncle of the U.S. president had been eaten by “cannibals” there during World War II.

Biden’s comments offended a key strategic ally as China moves to increase its influence in the region.

The president spoke at a Pennsylvania war memorial last week about his Army Air Corps aviator uncle Second Lt. Ambrose J. Finnegan Jr., whom he said was shot down over Papua New Guinea, which was a theater of heavy fighting.

“They never found the body because there used to be — there were a lot of cannibals for real in that part of New Guinea,” Biden said, referring to the country’s main island.

Marape said in a statement on Sunday that Biden “appeared to imply his uncle was eaten by cannibals.”
