For anyone interested, the book "Guns of August" is a fairly short well written history of the early part of WW I.  I've read quite a bit about the war and it's more interesting in some ways than I would have guessed beforehand.

I do need to learn more. Just looking at maps from the time is really interesting to me. Doesn't look much like today's map, or even one from 1946.

You can see a part of France then in German hands, and Germany extended well east into what is now Poland and Russia.

The Ottoman's got into all of this in part due to the German cruiser Goeben.  They chose poorly.

Crude oil prices today: WTI, Brent rise as Israel braces for Iran attack (cnbc.com)

Crude oil futures rose more than 1% Friday on reports that Israel is preparing for a direct attack by Iran this weekend, in what would be the biggest escalation of Middle East tensions since the start of the Israel-Hamas war last October.
The West Texas Intermediate contract for May delivery hit a session high of $87.67, while June Brent futures rallied to $92.18. Exxon Mobil stock hit an all-time intraday high of $123.74 as the oil rally lifted the energy sector.

U.S. crude was last up 98 cents, or 1.13%, at $85.98 a barrel, while the global benchmark was trading at $90.73, up 1.10% or 99 cents.
Israel is preparing for a direct attack by Iran on southern or northern Israel as soon as Friday or Saturday, a person familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. A person briefed by Iran’s leadership told the Journal that no final decision has been made, though plans for a strike are under discussion.

Dan Carlin has an awesome podcast on WWI called Blueprint for Armageddon. It's currently unavailable on his website but if you can find it elsewhere it's highly recommended. It's roughly 12 hours in total. I tortured my oldest son with it as we drove down to Cartersville, GA for one of his basketball tournaments a few years ago.

My first day at UNC we took some pretty extensive tests.  When I got out, I was exhausted and walked up into town to get a beverage.  I was 20.  I did not realize laws varied state by state.  I walked into a bar, clearly a bar, and ordered a G&T and the guy looked at me like I was crazy and said "We don't serve liquor."  They did have beer.

Coming from Athens, where bars were "bars", this was a bit of a shock.  And one could only buy liquor from an ABC (state) store or in some private club.  I later discovered that downtown Chapel Hill had only three "bars" worth naming, which also was a shock to me.

SYDNEY (AP) — A man stabbed six people to death at a busy Sydney shopping center Saturday before he was fatally shot, police said, with hundreds fleeing the chaotic scene, many weeping as they carried their children. Eight people, including a 9-month-old, were injured.

The 40-year-old was stopped in the knifing attack at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction, which is in the city’s eastern suburbs, when a police inspector shot him after he turned and raised a knife, New South Wales Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters.

“They just said run, run, run — someone’s been stabbed,” one witness told ABC TV in Australia. ”(The attacker) was walking really calmly like he was having an ice cream in a park. And then he went up the escalators ... and probably within about a minute we heard three gunshots.”

It is true that countries with much stricter gun control have much lower levels of homicide.  As oft noted, many Americans would like to emulate what they think Europe is like.
