That's fair, too.  But it was at the very least embassy-adjacent.

It's possible that diplomatic missions were conducted there.  But it's also about 99% certain that military operations were being conducted from that facility, given the fact that a senior Iranian military officer and several other officers from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were the ones who were both targeted, and confirmed, among the dead.

It's hard for me to gin up much sympathy for the deaths of Iranian military officers running operations against Israel in the middle of a proxy war they're voluntarily participating in, nor anger against Israel for performing a military strike against an obvious military target.

The strikes against the WCK and other aid workers, on the other hand, are pretty much unfathomable to me.

and if you think that's bad...take a look at what they did to al-shifa the largest hospital in Gaza and really the last functioning artery of what was left of a healthcare system on life support. absolutely horrific doesn't even begin to describe it.

look at the before and after pictures of Gaza, they've leveled everything in sight into a parking lot, and have turned it into an uninhabitable wasteland. these were already some of the poorest, most food insecure, most oppressed people in the world to begin with....now it's just at a level that is unbelievable really.

And of course all the deliberate attacks on aid workers (over 200 killed in the last 6 months) has caused many of these aid organizations to stop their operations in Gaza and stop providing crucial life saving medical care and food to a desperate population that is mostly women and children.

K. Tell that to the NYT and US gov't, who both say it's an embassy compound.
The U.S. says it has not confirmed the status of the building

My Marine friends talked about doing one of their summers in Israel.  They'd go out on practice exercises, and the Israelis would say "OK, this is how we do THIS.".  The Marines would say "Hold up, we're not allowed to do that in this situation, our ROEs are different."

They were impressed at how the IDF ROEs were quite a bit more "liberal" in terms of how to clear a building etc. than ours would be.  In other words, they aren't that concerned with either civilian casualties OR what the world thinks about them.

It's a small country with enemies on several sides and they are a bit paranoid and don't mess around.  And I don't think there is a whole lot the US can do about it.

Yeah, sure, I don't consider seeing it written in the NYT as "evidence", it's at best an indication.  I have not see where the US government called it an embassy, maybe they have.

UN Security Council fails to condemn strike on Iran in Syria | Reuters

The U.S. says it has not confirmed the status of the building struck in Damascus, but that it would be concerned if it was a diplomatic facility.
yeah, no. the UN security council failed to pass any kind of resolution on the strike because: the US has permanent veto power. As permanent members of the security council- they block and strike down every single UN resolution that even mildly chides Israel. Not only that- the airstrike was committed with US built planes and US made bombs that they gave to Israel for free. Gee, how nice, Daddy America. Don't make a modern rich nation buy weapons from you- give them to them for free and charge the US taxpayer for it! US has vetoed every single UN resolution calling for a cease fire since this war began. A pretty weak one finally just passed because the US abstained from voting.

they don't have rules of engagement, there rules are killing everything and anything in sight.

the underlined is zero excuse for the mass slaughtering and forced starvation of innocent women and children and an illegal occupation that has been going for decades.

and you're dead wrong, there's a WHOLE LOT the US can do about it. see: the HW administration when he pulled their loan guarantees which WORKED in pausing illegal settlement expansion and threatened them further with a pause on arm sales- really not even arms sales- more like free arms giveaways that the US taxpayer is on the hook for.

Iran Tells US to Step Aside as It Readies Response to Israel (msn.com)
US insane support to the hilt for Israel harms US national security. Period.

Not only is it THEFT from the US taxpayer, but it HURTS, not helps OUR national security.

I'm not sure Iran has the power to attack Israel directly with much effect, so I expect some sort of asymmetric attack, again, probably using proxies.

Would Iran launch missiles from Iranian territory to Israel?  I doubt it, maybe.  Their precision is probably not that exact, and they might get intercepted.

Will they try and attack some Israeli embassy somewhere else?  Maybe, those will be hard targets.

And I don't believe the US has much influence over Israeli ROEs, which is what I was talking about.  Maybe we can plead and use "harsh language", and the Israelis would say "Yeah, sure thing." and carry on.

This is stated policy and has been for a while.

NATO - Topic: Relations with Ukraine

  • In response to Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership, Allies agreed at the 2008 Bucharest Summit that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. They also agreed that Ukraine’s next step on its way to membership was the Membership Action Plan (MAP), NATO’s programme of political, economic, defence, resource, security and legal reforms for aspirant countries. In 2009, the Annual National Programme was introduced as Ukraine’s key instrument to advance its Euro-Atlantic integration and related reforms.
  • From 2010 to 2014, Ukraine pursued a non-alignment policy, which it terminated in response to Russia’s aggression. In June 2017, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted legislation reinstating membership in NATO as a strategic foreign and security policy objective. In 2019, a corresponding amendment to Ukraine's Constitution entered into force.
  • In September 2020, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved Ukraine's new National Security Strategy, which provides for the development of the distinctive partnership with NATO with the aim of membership in NATO. In September 2022, following Russia’s illegal attempted annexations of Ukrainian territory, Ukraine reiterated its request for NATO membership.
  • At the 2023 Vilnius Summit, Allies reaffirmed their commitment that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. Recognising Ukraine’s increased interoperability and substantial progress with reforms, they decided that Ukraine’s path to full Euro-Atlantic integration has moved beyond the need for the Membership Action Plan. Allies will continue to support and review Ukraine’s progress on interoperability as well as additional democratic and security sector reforms that are required on its path towards future membership. NATO Foreign Ministers will regularly assess progress through the adapted Annual National Programme. NATO will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met.

Bringing Ukraine Into NATO Without World War III - CEPA

I don't really agree with this position.  Well, I disagree entirely.

Dumb is a nice way to put it.

I cringed when he said that.
