Agree that Five Guys is more fast casual than fast food.  I don't think it's all that great and apparently it's really expensive these days, I think you're the one that posted recent prices?  Whew, crazy.
Admittedly all prices here in CA are crazy. A lot of times that I travel I'm surprised by the food prices. Five Guys just seemed especially crazy to me.

To me the main difference in fast food burgers is whether they are cooked to order or not. Of the Nots, I'd probably say my favorite is Wendy's. Probably biased, being in Columbus. Of the cooked to order, Steak N Shake is surprisingly good, and so is Culver's. Never had In and Out, had Whataburger a long time ago and can't really remember much about it.
I also tend to prefer Wendy's over the alternatives from McD's and BK. But not enough to actually go eat there, given the crazy price increases we've seen here. Not worth it for what you get.

Ain't that the truth.

My 14yo son loves fast food burgers, always begging for McDonald's or Wendy's or Whataburger or whatever.  So I had a very proud papa moment last night when he was hungry and begging for some crappy fast food, and I told him we were going to make a homemade burger that would blow away anything he could get at a restaurant, and cost less, too.

We had about 1/3 lb of ground beef leftover from something or other a couple nights before, and we had some hamburger buns in the pantry, and some cheese in the refrigerator.  I told him how to do it all, then made him throw the skillet on the burner, form the patty, season it, cook it to order (he wanted MW but now thinks he'd pefer M), add the cheese after flipping and tent a little foil to get it to melt nicely, butter and toast the bun on the skillet surface while letting the patty rest, and then throw on some lettuce, tomato, and whatever condiments he wanted.

He took his first bite and his eyes lit up and he said, "Dad, this is absolutely the greatest hamburger I've ever eaten."

So now I guess I'm gonna have to keep a lot more ground beef around the house...

We had burger last night, with my wife's cole slaw.  It was just the patty, no bun.  I spotted some day old 85-15 at Kroger half priced.

It's nearly as good a ssteak, to me.

We have Five Guys around here of course, I have not dined there in ages.  A good burger, no, a great burger, is just too easy to fix at home.

And I guess our Culver's must be different than yours.  They do have ice cream but I wouldn't say it's marketed any more or less than Dairy Queen does (DQ is a burger place here, not solely the ice cream shop that you sometimes see around the country).  Here's the closest Culver's to me:

Of course now I'm reminded of several more fast food burger chains I hadn't considered.  Dairy Queen, Sonic, Jack In The Box, and Carl's Jr/Hardees.  Man there sure are a lot of them.

Oh, and Checker Burger out in Florida.  For some reason I really liked those, when visiting my sister who lived there.  But I haven't had one in probably almost two decades.

Best burger stand burger I ever had was a green chili burger about 40 years ago at Lucky Boy in Albuquerque.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969

That is exactly like the Culver's we tried for lunch in North Port.  I think because the seating area was pretty large I didn't think it overlapped with a McDs.

We had just arrived and it's next to the motel.  I knew is was half decent.

There is a Portillo's across the street from where we stay in Orlando.  We tried it twice, I'd say that was enough, for me.  It was OK.

Of course, I dined at a 3 star Michelin place in January and didn't eat most of the food and the chef was eyeing me.  I eyed him back, and then walked outside.

There is a one star place that just relocated near us here, we stopped in to take a gander, they aren't open for lunch.  $205 per, pre fixe.  Holy Cow.  They encouraged us to bring our own wine as they don't have their permit yet, but holy cow, they have a $75 corkage fee.  That is insane.  I had some notion to try them.  Not now.

U
tee and I and no doubt some others have had some "real" good meals in France, and often for a very reasonably price.  I'm making tacos here tonight.

Yeah there's all sorts of local places that can blow the doors off the national chains.  I'm not really including those in the comparison, but I do love a local burger stand burger.  I really only eat chain food when we're on a road trip and trying to make a quick stop for lunch or something.

Amen, brutha.  So much good food and you don't have to go to a Michelin-starred restaurant to get it.  Just the neighborhood bistro very possibly has a highly trained chef with access to high quality locally sourced ingredients.

We used to have Hardee's and Burger Chef and a cheap place I can't remember, drive through only.  There is also Sonic, White Castle.  I'm not sure how some stay afloat.

Burger Chef has been gone from here since the early 80s, but I do remember it from my childhood.  They had an open salad bar where you could dress your own burger, choosing from lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and whatever else.  They were also the first chain to have a packaged kids' meal, even before McDonald's had the Happy Meal.

No White Castle or Crystal Burgers around here as far as I know.  I've had White Castle up north and I'm fine with never having it again...

And if you want to level up--grind it yourself. I usually go roughly even mix of brisket point and chuck roast, which leads to a REALLY nice fat content in there. Usually it's hard to find anything pre-ground at the supermarket with enough fat. Although I suppose you could ask them to custom grind something for you...

There is a Portillo's across the street from where we stay in Orlando.  We tried it twice, I'd say that was enough, for me.  It was OK.
Although I really like the burger at Portillo's, I eat there rarely enough that I'm usually ordering a jumbo dog with everything. Err... Two of them, actually. It gets me my Chicago Dog fix. They have decent Italian Beef sandwiches too, but it was never my favorite place in Chicago for Italian Beef, so I usually stick with the hot dog.

And if you go back, the cheese fries are key. The fries are good, but the fries with that cheese sauce are amazing.

Then there is White Castle of course, which arguably is the worst burger being sold today, though Crystal is right there too.

White Castle tastes better than most other laxatives.
