I read somewhere else that this alternate channel only has a draft of 11 ft. so no cargo ships going through that.

Yeah, what I read was that the channel was for salvage and recovery vessels to access the site, not for through commercial traffic.

The Corps of Engineers posted sonar images of the wreckage at the bottom of the channel. Yikes.

Israel at times felt a bit uncomfortable because there were serious looking IDF types in some places, especially inside old Jerusalem.  I wouldn't go to Israel today, but this was a year ago.  We also stopped in Oman, which also didn't feel at all unsafe.
I think I'd feel pretty safe in Israel in general, as long as there aren't active hostilities going on as there are now.

Truth is that no place is ever actually "safe".

truth is Israel is an inherently unsafe place and will continue to be so until the Palestinian question is answered. Whether that's a two state solution (lulz..fantasy) or Israel pushing as many Palestinians out as they possibly can and annexing most or all of the occupied territories (most likely outcome). As long as Israel continues to break international law and illegally occupy and build new settlements on Palestinian territory- it will remain a dangerous place where terror attacks and war will break out in cycle after cycle for generations- as it has for like 8 decades now.

there may be no place that is ever actually 100% "safe" - but some places are much safer than others.

I didn’t feel Israel was unsafe. Terror attacks there are rare in reality aside from the occasional brew up.  Statistically speaking.

Agreed. But we fear the things we don't know. As I brought up in another thread, people in the Midwest fear CA b/c of earthquakes but they just happen to "live with" tornadoes. People in CA fear the Midwest b/c of tornadoes but they "live with" the earthquake threat.

People who went to that country concert in Vegas thought it was safe. People who were going to work at their jobs in the WTC towers on 9/11 thought it was safe. Students who went to Columbine HS that day in the 90s, and the parents that sent them, thought it was safe.

I live in south Orange County which is "safe", but there are areas of OC that I wouldn't go at night. And then there was the time in the middle of the night that a crazy naked drunk (or drugged?) guy was going door to door and ended up on my front porch before the cops found him, in a nice quiet "safe" neighborhood--how many ways could that have ended badly?

But yet everyone's scared of Israel. As I said, absent active hostilities, I wouldn't worry about it. If I'm going for a week, the odds of a terror attack happening when I'm there are already slim. The odds of it happening anywhere near where I am, given the size of the country, are slimmer. The odds of it happening locally enough to me that I might be affected are even slimmer. And even if it happens within, say, 1/2 mi of where I am, the odds that I'll be injured are killed are even slimmer than that.

The big difference between Israel and someplace like Jordan or Egypt is that I know that in Israel I have virtually nothing to fear as a white American from the Israelis. In someplace like Jordan or Egypt I'd have something to fear from the locals, which is why CD ended up on a group tour on a bus rather than just strolling around the streets by himself.

a white man from America visiting those places? you have brass balls of steel my friend. I would love to visit Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, but I also value my life.
How do you know he's white?  It's racisist to presume.

I may have to actually schedule a different way to see these areas.  Twice now, I have had cruises that stop in Egypt and end in Israel cancelled.

I wouldn't hesitate to go to any of those places

Well I've seen pictures of CD posted on this forum. He's either white or he's an albino PoC :57:

I've met CD live in person. He is not white.

More like a tan or beige or maybe even a light peach.

don't get me wrong I'd love to visit there, but the problem is shit brews up every few years like clockwork, and Israel is a heavily militarized country with an extremist far-right government. Just me, but I'll pass on that until they get that government changed and the fundamental issue of Palestine resolved. I tend to like to visit places that are more stable, have less insanely far-right governments, are far less militarized and in a constant state of war, and that I don't have to even worry about for a second that some sh*t might go down. I have terrible luck. My luck, soon as I'd go there sh*t would hit the fan.

Lots of places I want to visit, very few that I actually will.

tell that to Sacha Baron Cohen, a western white man (who is also jewish) who was almost beaten to death by a group of hasidic jews for the crime of walking down the street because he was dressed overly flamboyant and gay when he was filming his movie Bruno- where he plays a gay Austrian fashionista character.

I assure you I cannot pull off "fabulous", so I'm pretty sure I don't have to worry about that.

If they don't like me wearing my cargo shorts, running shoes, and Texas Longhorns baseball cap, they can go ahead and try to make a run at me...
