I would have a hard time having income that wasn't pretty much locked in, e.g., as you have running your own business.  It's a mental thing for me, I'm not much of a risk taker.

Social Security, Medicare: What to expect in 2024 State of the Union (cnbc.com)

I personally don't look at what "leaders" say, I figure that will be 99% meant for political uptake, not real action, with a few notable exceptions.  This indeed is a third rail, and any solution is going to involve some pain for someones.  And any proposal will get pilloried by the "other side" for political purposes.

What COULD be attempted anyway, is to "compromise", and take some ideas from one side and some from the other and combine them into a package most could abide.  But it's too powerful an issue to simply do nothing and blame the other side.

It has not been easy, at all. We started this company in 2005 (I first was on my own in 2000). Things were great and then 2008 happened. That was a very rough stretch - I went with no pay for 30 months. Thankfully my wife had a great income that we could live off of.

It won't be for me.  I'll be on a thin aluminum tube somewhere over the Pacific at 500 knots risking life and limb and sleep.

I wouldn't watch or listen anyway.  One can read the speech later if one so desires in a lot less time.

As is often the case, instead of getting into an angry exchange I decided to do nothing last night and this morning my customer called me and apologized.  He told me he did not see my text, but he did see where his camera let him know someone was on the property.  He has had a lot of nosy neighbors milling around his place for no good reason other than to be nosy and is getting irritated at this and other things.  He did apologize, and I let him know I will be very cognizant to let him know when we will be in there late and make sure to receive a text or call back.

Great to hear, I kind of figured that might be the case, good to be a bit patient.

You have more patience than me. Maybe 15 years ago I'd keep him as a client. Not now.

Too old for that shit, and I hate people.

I've mentioned this before, but IF you are blessed one year with higher income than is typical, look into setting up a Charitable Fund, it's pretty easy and doesn't incur fees (a tiny amount).  Then you can make future charitable donations from said fund.

And it's tax deductable in the year you fund it if you find more than your standard deduction (which today is pretty high).

$50,000 would do it, for most, more if you can manage of course.  Then you can donate however you want without worrying about not having a tax deduction.

We did exactly this after 2018 - my record $$$$ year. Brought us down a bracket. We contribute when we can now. It gives to community colleges, private hospitals, food banks, veteran causes and other things we find compelling. Certainly nothing to politicians.

Mike Tyson who is nearly 60 years old is fighting a 20-something YouTuber Paul brother in a boxing match live on Netflix at the Dallas Cowboys stadium.

Make it make sense. Massive cash grab and it astounds me that this has even become a thing...YouTubers fighting ex-pro UFC fighters and boxers that are way past their primes and over the hill.
