Global Entry is a scam IMHO.  My wife wanted this, I have not found the regular lines to be excessive of late, but she signed me up, or thought she did.  She waited for an "appointment" for months, literally, and got one this morning.  So, we trapse to the airport and the lady tells us it's ONE appointment, not for both of us.  That was not clear at all.

So, she goes in, has a one minute "appointment" and then chit chats a bit.  I'm outside, and another couple come in saying they drove 4 hours for their "dual" appoinment, learn the same thing we did.  My wife said there is almost nothing to the "interview", they could have slid me in easily in the time allotted.

I was not amused.  She wants to get me an appointment and I said "no thanks".  An hour and a half wasted, not counting all the time spent trying to get this silly appointment.  We'll see in two weeks if she gets through any faster than me enough to make up for the time lost today.

Guvmint.....  and of course in the office were 4-5 "officers" doing nothing.
I suggest you just make the appointment.

  • If she stops using Global Entry because you didn't do it (and she wants you two to stay together through customs), she's going to be pissed at you for not doing it.
  • If you two go through different lines and she's stuck waiting for you because the normal line is slower, she's going to be pissed at you.
  • If you two go through different lines and you get done first DESPITE her having Global Entry, she's going to be pissed at herself and it's going to manifest at being pissed at you.

There are times it's worth being firm, and times it's not. This will irk her about you for the next 5 years of travel, to save an hour and a half. Just suck it up and do it.

We came back from Italy one time. I had GE and the wife only had TSA.

We tested it.

I waited for her for 90 minutes at the tram terminal and had 2 bloodies and a beer.

We travel maybe twice a year internationally.  Of late, the time to get through the regular lines has been 2-3 minutes.  Last time I watched a person go through GE and they finished MAYBE a minute ahead of me, at best.  I'm sure she will complain she had to wait 2 extra minutes.  The last time we came in we waited 30 minutes for our luggage anyway.

The ATL has a glitch in that the International Terminal built a great expense only has 11 gates, so at least half the time, you arrive on Concourse F instead.  Then you walk "forever" to get to the Intl Terminal to go through customs, and then for whatever reason your luggage takes forever.  If you come in from Canada, you deplane at the regular terminal because you already cleared customs, BUT your luggage goes to the Intl Terminal, and they don't tell you that.

I've never waited more than 10-15 minutes in the US to get through customs.

Dallas is a joke. Customs there absolutely sucks, and nobody knows what they are doing.

Just getting an appointment is a drawn out mess.  Everyone who came in made some comment like "Whew, it took me a year to get this appointment.".

The other couple that had the same deal as us was unhappy after driving so long to get there.  Anyway, we'll find out if it saves any time in two weeks.
I have Global entry and it has saved me sitting in a line of over a hundred people at customs at least once and gotten me through TSA much quicker almost all the time

Kinda funny, also, my wife also wanted CLEAR.  OK fine, I guess we picked the wrong day to travel.  The Clear line was slower than the TSA Precheck line.  And we had to waste time entering our biometric data.  We used it in Hawaii, but he TSA line was empty anyway.  I didn't say anything.  At least it works even if it's a bit wonky in my view.

And our returm flight comes through DFW so hopefully their immigration has improved, some.

I was shocked how fast it was in England, you scan your PP and you're done.

We just did it through there on American, coming back from Mexico.

You will probably land in Terminal D. You'll then have to go to the customs area to get your bags. Then you find the line for American citizen entry and go through customs (not through the Global Entry line). You will encounter an extremely long line if it's anything like we experienced.

Then you re-check your bags at the American Counter and get your boarding passes.

Hopefully for you, your connection time is at least 3 hours. Ours was 2 hours and we barely made it - WITH Global Entry.

Ugh. That's one thing I'm worried about when we do the Ireland trip this year. Which will also be on American.

We'd choose different routing, but the goal is for us and my in-laws from San Antonio to all be on the same flight into and leaving Dublin despite starting at different airports. So we'll probably do John Wayne -> DFW while they'll do San Antonio -> DFW and converge from there, and then Dublin -> DFW on the way back and split.

I know the return is going to be annoying.

You should consider everyone meeting at ORD. Very easy to navigate that airport.

I just saw a butterfly flap its wings. That will cause a cascading series of events over the course of the next 6 months leading to a 5 hour delay at ORD the day we travel.

Because that always seems to be the case at ORD.

(To be honest, we'll actually probably pick the connecting airport based on price / time. But given the number of SNA->DFW and SAT->DFW flights available on American, I'm just assuming that's the most likely routing. But if it's ORD, then it's all good.)

The only times we have trouble at ORD is when it's snowing. Other than that, it's a breeze.

We are heading on a trans-Atlantic cruise at the end of April. Going to fly back out of Paris to Boston.  Haven't done customs there but I know Global entry was great coming back from Mexico and coming back from Rome.

Good to know DFW may be a Charlie Foxtrot, but if we miss that flight, at least we're back in the US.

Paris (CDG) is my least favorite airport by far, but last time going through immigration was quite easy, but it was January.  That place gets unbelievable in August.
