I think we benefit by having a stable group of trading partners in Europe.  The alternative situation with little to no US "interest" could be pretty dire.

We also benefit in having military allies in the region instead of foes, or even neutral parties.  I do think the US should review all it's overseas commitments realizing we can't continue spending like this forever.

Allies?

The ones who don't meet their NATO spending obligations?

Those allies?

Yes, I include those as well.  The 2% level is obviously arbitrary, a reasonable figure  when the Soviet Union was an apparent threat.  And I agree countries like Germany should be "forced" to hit 2%, as they claim to be doing now.  I just read that 18 NATO countries will now hit the 2% level, Germany was really the one missing because their economy is so large relatively speaking.  It doesn't matter much if Portugal is low.

I think we benefit from having a stable Europe no matter what.  The alternative would not be pretty.

The US tax payer benefits in my view when as much of the world is stable and not at war.  The core idea in all this spending is to try and ensure there are no conflicts.

What's the benefit to the American taxpayer?

Is it travel, for those of us who can afford to?
Stable trade partners are fairly important to an economy like ours.  We're about to find out just how important, as China's instability intensifies.

What I worry about:

Russia moves into NATO countries, say the Baltics. Now we are in a war with Russia as a NATO member.

China decides to take Taiwan and moves on the Philippines, Guam and even Hawaii.

Iran and North Korea are helping China and Russia.

Can Japan, Australia and South Korea stand up to China? Very doubtful.

Does the US have enough power to fight on two fronts, like it did in WWII? Very doubtful.

Maybe I worry too much. Maybe not.

China at this point lacks much ability to project power over much distance from mainland China.  They are trying to build up because even taking Taiwan is, I think, outside their capability, today.  To attack the PI or Japan etc. is well outside their abilities.  A major need would be air support, which means carriers, which they don't have in amount and quality needed.

Japan has a pretty credible self defense force that is expanding.  The logistics of sending a significant force across a major body of water and keeping it supplied is "difficult", especially if contested by submarines and/or air attack.

I don't think Russia has any current interest in the Baltics.  That is subject to change depending on what happens with Ukraine.  But I think it would be years out.

I wonder, has China's modern military ever been in any kind of a real shooting war? Not the Korean war, because as I understand it, they simply threw bodies in there with no real military strategy.

The US and some of it's allies have had: WW I and II (obviously), Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War I and II, Afghanistan, and countless military operations and skirmishes throughout the last 30+ years.  I'm talking Panama, Somalia, OPS in Pakistan and all the Stans.

What military conflict has China done?

They attacked Vietnam a while back, didn't go so well.  They did have some strategy in the Korean War, their tactics were unimaginative, but so were ours often as not.

I wonder how many of their top generals are political appointees in effect.

How about we re-elect Trump in November and put all these assholes back to sleep for 4 more years?

Gorgeous day here, I went to the park for a bit, a lot of young female types strolling and jogging about.  And one old man.  I threw some against the tennis practice wall, my arm is ... well, old.

We're cooking up a trip in September to Istanbul with our semi-crazy neighbor, he'll be there anyway.  I have a zero Bday that month.  I was checking plane fares and remain astonished at how expensive it is to fly up front.  We'll stay in comfort seats.  Or main cabin if I get exit rows.  Also have a 3 day jaunt up into the mountains here in April.

The world, and particularly college football, seem determined to GTH with me watching.

Man, I just don't see us ever doing Turkey. We're not interested in going to places where "we" are generally not liked.

More Western Europe or Asia is on our radar now.

South Korea, Japan, maybe Taiwan (if it exists). Travel there is a beast. Probably visit family in the LA area for a break, then hit Hawaii for a bit. Break it up a little.

There are some nice cruises down the line over there.

We spoke with several folks who have been, including one fellow who is Greek.  They are unanimous that it's a fabulous place to visit.  And with our neighbor there to show us about, it probably will work well.  But then, I've also visited Oman, Turkey sounds positively western.
