...yeah... I was joking...

We have InO here.  I don't ever go.  It's better than McDonald's but not as good as Whataburger or a couple other more local hamburger chains, so I really have no reason to visit.

Speaking of In-N-Out Burger…

…and the Bay Area…

…and Crime…

...for the first time ever In-N-Out is closing a location:

Whataburger is MEH to me. Never had it in Texas, but the few times I've had it in FL & GA- thought it was better than like a McD's but nothing that great. To me I much prefer In-N-Out over Whataburger- even though I think In-N-Out's fries SUCK royally. There was this place I went to in Austin called P Terry's Burger Stand that had a really cool looking building that I thought was pretty damn good for a fast food burger joint.

Can't speak for Whataburgers outside of the CenTex area, but it's way better than InO.  Also, it's different because the menu is MUCH larger than InO.  Not only can I customize any of their sandwiches and get them on a bun, or Texas toast, but the amount of options I can add is a lot larger than InO.  I can add onions or grilled onions, pickled jalapenos or grilled jalepenos, bacon, all of the normal toppings like lettuce-tomato-pickles, all kinds of different types of sauces including a more-than-decent BBQ sauce.  And beyond the burger they have all kinds of chicken sandwiches and chicken biscuits, a fish sandwich, and they're open 24 hours and they serve breakfast from 11  PM to 11 AM.  It's really not a fair comparison for InO, they can't come anywhere close to that kind of menu.

P Terry's is one of the other local chains I was referring to.  It's probably a better comparison to InO due to it being basically just a hamburger stand, and I consider it to be much better than InO.  There's another local chain called Dan's that's also much better.  Basically, if I had to choose between McDonald's and InO I'd go with InO.  But I don't have to make that choice.

I think I've been to Whataburger once or twice while traveling, and I can't say I recall it very well. Certainly not enough to offer an opinion on the burger quality.

However, I disagree with the idea that having a more expansive menu necessarily makes one place better than another.

I.e., just like Whataburger, McDonalds has a much more expansive menu than In n Out, but I don't think anyone here (incl utee who made the expansive menu point) is going to claim that a McDonalds burger is better than an In n Out burger.

Quality and variety are orthogonal attributes when evaluating a restaurant. I don't want to eat at a place that has an expansive menu if all they serve is various flavors of sh!t. And I'm not going to avoid eating at a place if they only have serve one item I like but that one thing makes the visit worthwhile for me because it's so good.

Maybe that makes Whataburger a better place for a family of five trying to successfully accommodate disparate tastes, but it's a different discussion than whether a core menu item from one place is better than a similar core menu item from another.

Is the burger griddled to order?

Is the bun toasted?

They get those two things right, everything else is just minor details. You can screw it up - I noted the last time at Five Guys was miserable. That was because I ordered whatever their "all the way burger" was, but it had way too much crap on it and the bun disintegrated. But fresh burger with a fresh toasted bun is pretty can't miss.

Ron D is out, which makes me happy. He can now focus on Florida. I wish he'd never got in. Oh well.

Whataburger is better, and has a larger and better menu.  There, I've settled the debate.

I do not concede that Whataburger has a better burger. However, I am also not debating it, as I do not have enough experience with Whataburger to evaluate the claim.

As performing the required evidentiary collection to make a claim involves eating delicious burgers, I look forward to having an opportunity to do so.
