I lack an articulate definition of what constitutes brutalist architecture, but I know it when I see it.

I was always told that nearly 2/3 of UT's....I guess not "campus", but classrooms?  Square footage inside buildings?....was underground.

I just assumed it's because the buildings are ugly and they had to be buried where they couldn't be seen.

Actually, due to space restrictions within the downtown area, but why let reality get in the way of a good jab?

Thats interesting

I went there for 4 years and never had an underground class

In all the years you spent there did you?

That doesn't sound right.  A handful of buildings on campus have some underground sections, but the limestone is just a few inches below the soil across pretty much the entire city, so basements aren't very common.  You basically have to use dynamite to blast anything more than a small hole, and dynamite blasting is pretty heavily regulated.

Some of those buildings you posted have either been completely remodeled or torn down, I think. The problem with A&M’s architecture is that it’s never been consistent. We grew leaps in every decade after the 50’s and the campus is massive, over 5,000 acres. So you can be in West Campus, which was almost all built after the 80’s and it looks completely different than main campus, much of which was built in every era from the 1800’s to present.

Aggies we’re mostly a practical people, I think we valued simplicity over style. It never even occurred to me the buildings were ugly.

They have built so much since I’ve been gone I hardly recognize campus.

This is the Zachary building, one of the major engineering buildings that they completely remodeled. I literally did not recognize it when I was there last.

That doesn't sound right.

Never did to me either.  In general, if you lack horizontal space to grow into, you build up....higher buildings with more stories, instead of digging down.  And that's without the limestone, which, trust me...I know from my days as a landscaper there how miserable that stuff is to deal with.

I just Google'd it and all I could find was info about an extensive tunnel network below campus used for utilities.

I obviously never spent much time there other than DKR on game days.  That was told to me by some undergrad chicas and a law student and I assumed they knew what they were talking about.  From this I conclude that Longhorn wimminz are beautiful, but possibly susceptible to urban legends about campus.  tbf, it's possible they said 1/3, not 2/3...I could easily be misremembering that, but I still can't find any info on anything like that.
