Was just helping my oldest with his AP Chem homework. I haven't taken a Chem class in 28 years.

He was trying to figure out an energy transfer problem where he'd be putting 100C metal into 20C water and trying to find the final temperature of both.

He kept setting up the problem as Tlost=Tgained and just kept beating his head against it (for a day and a half).

I looked it over and his math looked right. I said "bring me the book". He brought me a homework packet... Something looked wrong (a positive that "should" be negative if you do the problem Tlost=Tgained). So I reiterated: "bring me the book."

Looked it over, and there it was...

Tlost = -Tgained

I still don't know sh!t about chemistry, but I know if the math looks right and you're getting a completely impossible answer, you're not setting up the problem right. And the book should show you how to set up the problem. And it did...

And he'd have saved a lot of time if he'd looked closely at it.

So he learned a valuable lesson. RTFM, son.
my son would have failed that class if he looked to me for help

All social media is poison.
it's demonstrable.
This isn't an opinion.

Limits are prudent.
Unfettered free speech isn't a good idea (yelling "fire" in a crowded space).
Unfettered free speech, guided by a money-making scheme and influenced by every dishonest interlocutor on the planet?
Nope.

You don't have a teenage daughter.

The TV was intake only.  Entertainment and ads.  The biggest sins were obesity and being influenced to buy a specific cereal.
Not even close.

My teenage daughter doesn't give a rat's ass about social media.  I raised her right.

Not likely, she's been to the campus in College Station and was not overly impressed with the Eastern Bloc Soviet-era architecture.

Yeah, it was funny... My wife visited Purdue with me in 2019 for the TCU game and she was impressed by how the campus architecture/design makes it look like a "real" college. Big brick buildings around the main quad, etc...

I visited her alma mater (UCSB) and was impressed because the ocean was right.effing.there! The architecture was decidedly more modern and not evoking that traditional "college" feal.
