traitor!
American manufacturing union killer!
Ya as GM had moved I forget how many jobs to Mexico claiming a world car and all that BS. Not only weren't they taxed as imports because they were US Companies but those kind men at Corporate never came down on the price of the cars as quality of workmanship took a hit. I wonder where all the money they saved went to as they didn't pass it along to consumers, hmm real :017: title=017

you remember the old daze

pulling up in a rice burner at the local pub was similar to buzzing the Hell's Angels with a Kawasaki

caused some family members to be excluded from holiday gatherings

As I remember it, the Japanese automakers were already eating the Big Three's lunch when it came to reliability well before NAFTA. Problem was everything looked like a shitty econobox. Once they hired some decent designers and made their cars look on par with modernity, they actually gained serious traction...

I've always used the below heuristic when looking at the various options:

  • Domestic: cheap to acquire, breaks regularly, cheap to fix
  • Japanese: a little more expensive to acquire, rarely breaks, cheap to fix
  • German & Euro in general: expensive to acquire, breaks regularly, arm&leg to fix

The Koreans are in an interesting place, sort of finding their way like the Japanese automakers were doing in the 90s. My take is that they tend to be cheap and reliable, but they've been sorta all over the map when it comes to styling so far. In general I've been impressed with the cars overall but some of them are ugly as sin.

BTW I've almost always found my way to domestics, because they're cheaper to acquire and I can handle a lot of the basic work myself--and when I don't, there are plenty of quality mechanics outside the dealerships that I can find someone competent and trustworthy. But my wife wanted a Lexus, and I know a local Lexus dealer from homebrewing so I knew I'd get a good deal, so she has a Lexus.

Wha...are you eating sponge cake and drinking schnapps with your runzas? Never owned a bike came too close to becoming a hood ornament peddling one

And my 1st Corolla was a '90 as I was going to buy a Geo Prizm which were actually Corolla drive tranes made in Fremont Cali.My dad got the A-Plan thru Chevy but for kicks and giggles I stopped at a Toyota Dealership that a few friends were wrenches at. I actually cut a better deal than that. That car only broke down like the last year I had it,something in the ignition module had corroded

I'd by the ugliest car on the lot if it lasted the longest with the fewest problems

I can't really imagine owning either of them

in 1990 I was probably driving a mid 80's Caprice Classic

I was driving a minivan for years.  They were quite functional, and boring.  The good news is my wife says she really really likes the Tuscon.  I like it "OK", it's certainly not very exciting, but boring can be OK for long drives, and it's much quieter than I expected.

And it has a lot of features, some of which I'll never use.  A couple nice to have are memory driver's seat and cooled seats and a power rear tailgate that opens handsfree if you need that.  The height is also adjustable which is a nice feature so it doesn't clunk off the ceiling.  She wanted the ventilated seats.  We had them in the CTS but I couldn't tell they were on, these in the new car are pretty noticeable.

The steering is pretty numb, which is predictable.  Handling and acceleration are in the adequate range.
