Have you looked at the cost of education versus inflation in the past 30 or so years?

I graduated in '02 from one of the smaller state schools...not as expensive as LSU.  My tuition was ~$1100 per semester for five 3-credit-hours classes.  It was a little more than that after you factor in textbooks and some other fees, but in the terms people usually refer to, it was about that much.

About 7-8 years ago I was talking to a friend of mine in Louisiana and she mentioned her daughter being at that same college and they paid $5k per semester.  I couldn't believe it because that way outpaced inflation, but she assured me that's what they paid.  Now we pay half of my stepson's tuition at a comparable university in Texas, not far away from the school I went to.  It's about $5.5k per semester.  I know for a fact that people at this school back when I was in school were also paying about $1100, just as I did.  So in about 15 years, that's how much tuition ballooned at these schools.

I think tuition right now at LSU is something like $10k per semester, double what it is at these smaller universities.  But I'm not positive about that.

Wages are stagnant for some, but not all. Anyone with a real degree or trade certificate does just fine.

My guess is you haven't, based on your statement.

Colleges have raised tuition because they know that students can get Government (taxpayer) backed loans, no matter the means or cost.

Maybe this will help you.

Everyone knows higher education has skyrocketed 1000+%.

Student loan forgiveness for government workers (or anyone else) is not good.

You buy a car and don't pay? Here comes the repo man.

You buy a house and don't pay? Here comes the bank for your keys.

Why should student loans be forgiven (to gain voters)?

How about "we" forgive all mortgages too?
17 year olds aren't legally held accountable as children, but 2 years later you want them held to lifelong debt?
What sense does that make?

Your one-size-fits-all bullshit attitude of "handle your shit" is vapid.  You're smarter than it.

17 year olds are only a small fraction of student loan holders and if thats your only defense for forgiveness it really is minor

Correct. That and their parents must co-sign for the loan.

One size fits all is very close. Too many kids go to college for the wrong reasons.

See my post above, about 65% in the US versus 35% in Utopia (Europe).

Utopia decides for you around the 8th grade whether you are college material. Here, everyone gets a trophy and can go to college.

Maybe we really should be more like Utopia after all!!

When I started at UW, my OOS tuition was $11K/year.

I got residency in my second year as I had a studio apartment up there and paid state income tax and was working part time as a test grader and TA (yes, as an undergrad) in hydraulics labs. Changed my DL and license plates. I lived there 3 nights/week - sometimes 2 because I was working full-time in Rosemont, IL - 120 miles away.

My in-state tuition was $2200/year then, for the last two years.

Now, in-state is $10K and OOS is $40K.

This is 30+ years ago when I was there.

My community college was $30/credit hour when I started 40 years ago. It is now $135/credit hour.

Do the math.

Time to start dropping rates now. I hope the Fed is paying attention.

According to the Interwebz, in-state tuition for a year at LSU is $11,954, not much more than some of these smaller schools I reference.  It doesn't say how many hours that's for or what exactly a "year" means, but I'm assuming that's a spring and a fall semester, no summer, for five classes each.  Out of state tuition is $28,631 annually.

But then it lists something called "Other Expenses" which is thousands of dollars, and is not the same as Books & Supplies or Room & Board.  With all those things added in, in-state students pay $35,158/yr and out of states pay $51,836/yr.

Jeez.

No way in hell I'd recommend somebody go to a place like that.  It's not like they know a better kind of math, history, or whatever, than somewhere else.  The "prestige" of a more well-known university also doesn't hold water when the research is clear that students who excel wherever they are succeed at a much higher rate post-school-career than students who are run-of-the-mill wherever they are.  i.e., take a Valedictorian at Podunk U and an average kid from Harvard, the Podunk U kid has a much higher success rate.

Go somewhere cheap and excel.  If a university is where you need to be in the first place.  $140 - 175k for in-state or $208 - 260k for out-of-state for a degree from a place that largely makes you dumber and doesn't even teach you how to boil crawfish?  Nah.

I meant 17 year olds in general, not that they're any fraction of those holding debt, lol.

The subject was forgiveness of student loans not 17 year olds in general

if your point is the gov should not loan money to 17 year olds I agree but again thats not what we are discussing

Jesus Christ.
My point was that 17 year olds aren't expected to be held accountable for anything, but 2 years later, they're free to take on life-long crippling debt.
That's a bad system.
.
Nothing to do with 17 year olds getting loans.
