Hey, if it were my kid I'd have plenty to tell him.  When it's the wife's kid, I choose my battles very carefully.  And fortunately, he's an overall good kid who doesn't require many battles.

Probably not, but if you make a plan and put your mind to it, you'd have a good chance to become a high-level chemist.

I have a lot of confidence in you.

The 50 greatest innovations of 2023

Here at Popular Science we celebrate innovation. Whether it’s a new medical treatment, infrastructure project, consumer product, or big idea, they almost always spring up as the solution to a problem. Some honorees address age-old annoyances while others speak to larger and even existential issues that profoundly affect people around the globe. This year, we’ve selected honorees that exemplify this desire to improve people’s lives, just as we have every year since 1988.

That server water heater is a cool concept... I can tell you from being in that world that cooling a data center is a MASSIVE portion of the power draw of a data center--literally everything inside the data center is generating heat, and you need a lot of airflow to cool it. There's a lot of research being done on liquid immersion as a cooling method but there are a lot of issues with that.

I can't imagine the logistical problems of distributing your compute across a bunch of residential homes... But to actually use the waste heat of compute for something that today has to be done with NG or electricity is solving two problems.

And the aquatic carbon capture could be interesting... Of course PopSci doesn't have much info on the economics of it other than it being more economical than taking it out of the air. But that's a discussion for the environment thread...

Meaning wages have been stagnant since 1970.
They crept up for the 20 years before that, incrementally, and were enough to provide for a family.
Since then, people make the same amount of money, while the cost of everything has increased.
.
So we wind up with the generation that had it financially easy bitching about the young generation that has it financially impossible (when talking one-income families).
Surprise: Wage growth has actually outpaced the crushing inflation over the past 2.5 years. ‘The economy appears to be doing better than a lot of people might realize’

The average American might not have much faith in the current U.S. economy, what with the cost-of-living increase over the past few years and persistent recession warning bells. But Americans have many reasons to feel confident—including that wage and salary growth are now outpacing inflation, according to myriad government data.

Far be it from me to argue with the government--I'm sure they have no reason to obfuscate or ineptitude to overcome--but that has not been our experience.  The price of multiple things, food being chief amongst them, have gotten a little out of control the past couple years and our wages haven't increased one penny.  And it's painfully obvious when I do the budget each month.  Wherever this great wage growth is happening, I gotta get in on that.

Go work for the government. Their wages always increase.

I haven't had one in about 6 years. So, decrease.
