And that can be a problem. A lot of them go to college to get a degree that prepares them for little more than being a barista. So they're not qualified for the kinds of higher-paying jobs they think should be open to them as a college graduate. But they didn't learn a skill (skilled trades, medical certification, etc), so they have to go BACK to school to become qualified for one of these other jobs that pays more than being a barista.

My point exactly

When they get out there and find there are very few jobs open to them they want to blame America and its class system as the reason when they really did it to themselves
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

You can get a great job looking like that.

Well, as long as you also have an engineering degree.

I hired a guy once who showed up his first day with purple hair.  He turned out to be one of my best hires.  The purple didn't last that long.

We had another guy my buddy hired as a temp.  We shared a larger lab, and I saw this fellow working quite effectively.  The weird thing was he had a degree in archeology.  The good thing is he learned stuff quickly and was a hard worker.  So I hired him too.

He and the purple hair dude would often stay out late and then show up a bit late to work, so I had on occasion to suggest they make it in by 9 AM.  Then I got a boss, an Italian lady, who would show up around 10 AM, maybe, and then often leave around 2 or so.  If there was any hint of a snow flake she'd go home earlier.  Fortunately, she was worse than worthless, so having her not be around was a plus.  She made my top 3 worst bosses.

Yep. I realize that perhaps my experience (tech companies in CA) might be different than Badge. But literally if you have the skills that are relevant in this industry, nobody really cares what color your hair is.

It might limit *some* think, for example you might not exactly be first in line for customer-facing roles. But if your job is writing firmware, all anyone cares is whether your code works.

I didn't care, but he got razzed about is some, which didn't bother him.  In such a straight laced company it was a bit odd.  When I started, all "staff" wore ties, and the technicians didn't.  All staff would carry a briefcase home each day.

After a year or so, I quit with the briefcase thing, I almost never worked at home.  The tie thing lasted about five years.

Ah, memories of working.  I think about work maybe once a week, briefly.

IMO, there's another part of the problem OAM referenced in addition to the skills-track y'all are talking about.  Financial literacy.  It's true that it's harder right now to achieve the baseline middle class standard of living we think of as "normal," but the problem has also been exacerbated by a total lack of knowledge of what a plan looks like, how to implement it, how to budget for it, and then the discipline to stick with it (that last part maybe doesn't fall under financial literacy).

Recently my youngest stepson has complained a lot about what the world, Boomers, Xers, politicians, etc. have done to him and how hard it is now to make ends meet.  I got tired of it and just the other day sat down with he and his gf and crunched the numbers on what they make right now, what they stand to make with potential entry level jobs in their fields once they get them, and what realistic bills and expenses look like in our little corner of the country.  Lined it all out for them, including savings, all the way through to hitting retirement goals, both individually and a scenario where they're married and have two incomes.  It does seem harder than when I was starting out, but still very doable.  I told him the worst part at the moment is he won't have the "luxury" he's used to here while we pay all his bills, for a while, anyway.

He still grumbles about it, but now with some awareness that he doesn't really have very good points.  I'd like to tell him we'd be doing better than we're doing right now if he'd quit taking his sweet time through college, seemingly unaware I don't feel like paying tuition forever, or of the boon he's being handed by getting out without any debt/student loans.  But I don't.

You should.  If for no other reason than illustrating what the Boomers/X'ers ARE doing for him.
