My notion was post retirement, though I considered getting an RV ahead of time to "try it out" and get used to it.  I know there is some work associated with maintenance of the various and sundry.  I could decide it was too much hassle and I'd just stay in Hiltons instead (as I do pretty much today).

We had a family reunion in Townsend, TN 20+ years ago.  My cousins had RVs, I rented a little cabin in the RV park for me and my kids.  It was nice (until my son put some poison ivy in the fire we had going).  We of course explored their RVs, they were all monsters, 28+ feet as I recall.

When we pass one on the road I say on occasion "That could be us!" and my wife says "That could be YOU."

We do a fair bit of travel now outside NA where an RV really isn't an option.  Of course, our hotels in France this next trip are running $250 a night and up.
The wife and I have come close a couple of time buying an RV for retirement, but ultimately decided it just wasn't the lifestyle we wanted.  We fill just fly where we want to go and stay in a nice hotel or AirBNB.  We rent a homeaway apartment in Rome and it was nice and wasn't too expensive particular compared to the hotels.

When I started work, they had a monthly newsletter that came about, and one portion was interviews with about to retire employees (a thing which seemed far far far off for me).  They were remarkably similar, in nearly every case, the folks were going to travel, play golf and/or bridge, move to a sunnier clime, and read a lot.

I enjoy bridge and golf but don't play either now.  Travel is a thing for us.  And I do read quite a bit.

Drew lives in NC. I checked and didn't see anything posted in the A51 forum about it. Most of those guys are from/went to Tennessee. Maybe @DunkingDan knows more.

The DC swamp will never be drained.  It's been there for ages, and will survive for ages.

I have seen Drew post on his Facebook page in the last 48 hrs.

The tornadoes were mainly in West Tn and northwestern Central Tn. While it is not the common time of year of an outbreak like this there it is not unusual either in those areas. I have been camping during deer season there a couple times in outbreaks like this. Storms like this are one of the few things I miss about my native state.

Someone made a post about the storms, https://www.cfb51.com/area-51/tennessee-tornadoes-leave-at-least-6-dead/

President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”

I was still in college at Austin Peay when the last big tornado hit Clarksville. I woke up at about 4AM to the wind blowing really hard. My cat was going nuts. I never thought of it being a tornado. I just thought it was a windstorm. I was doing my student teaching in Nashville at the time so I just got up and took my time getting ready to leave for that. It wasn't until I stopped for gas on my way out of town that I started hearing whispers of a tornado. My car radio didn't work and getting on the internet meant popping in my AOL desk and listening to the old dial-up connection sound. My car broke down on I-24 just outside of Nashville and a police officer eventually came along to help. I didn't have a cell phone because they weren't the ubiquitous and ever-present conveniences they are now. I called a friend from a gas station pay phone to come and get me and then called the school to tell them I wouldn't be in that day. The secretary answered and started crying when I told her it was me. She said they thought I'd been killed in the tornado. It turns out I was just about four blocks outside the radius of that storm that did this damage:

Checked in with Burnt Eyes and he's ok, he doesn't live in the same area as the storms.

Wife officially retired at the end of October she is 59, I have 129 days until I retire I am 63.  We already play golf together pretty regularly.  We have 6 cruises schedule for the next year with 2 of the cruises being in Europe where it will be combined with other European travel beyond the cruises.  I already live in a sunnier climate and read a lot.

The wife's late husband died at 59, her brother retired at 70 and died a couple of months later, my brother-in-law could have retired years ago, he is 65, but kept putting it off and now has terminal brain cancer.  We decided we are going to retire, travel, do the things we want to do until we can't do it.  No idea if we have tomorrow so why put it off if you don't have to.  Don't think I will run out of money, but if I do it will be when I can't do all the things I want to anyway.

Usually, before a person "runs out of money", they have done what they wanted to do, and they can see it coming 2-3 years out anyway and can cut back.  The danger, I think, is becoming in such poor health that you have to enter a full time care facility.  I have some insurance for that possibility, my wife does not.  It's expensive insurance.

For better or worse, my ancestors were long lived, generally.  Several that I know of went past 100, my uncle hit 104.  His ambition was to get past his grandmother who died at 102.  I think my Dad would have made it also but he had some ailments that caused his decline that aren't genetic.

The other major health related item is being able to walk.  We walk a lot, and being able to walk basically opens a lot of doors.  My wife has had three hip replacements, but she does pilates three times a week.  My major advice on retirement is to go somewhere where you will like to walk about a lot.
