This happened this morning in my neighborhood: https://patch.com/california/missionviejo/house-fire-breaks-out-mission-viejo-wednesday-morning

It's <1/4mi as the crow flies. Apparently whatever started it was loud enough that my wife woke up and so did the dog, but since there was no continued noise, she thought nothing of it--and then heard tons of sirens but didn't realize they were in our neighborhood.

I got up at my normal time and on my dog-walking route went right past that cross street, seeing it blocked off with sheriff's tape and TONS of emergency vehicles on that street. Based on the normal gossip dog-walking circuit, people think it might have been a gas line which went kaboom...

So that's been my excitement for the day.

Wow!  If it's natural gas, it's not usually pressurized to more than like 1/4 PSI for residential delivery lines.  So it if went BOOM then it must have been building up in a poorly ventilated space for a while.  That's scary stuff!

Yeah, from the discussions I had walking the dog, there was someone else who said her house shook.

Of course, we're talking about people who don't know anything, so it could just be rumor and the cause was something else exploding.

It also looks like the house was under contract for sale, as of 2 days ago. Not sure what to make of that. But I'm guessing the buyer no longer wants it :57:

yikes

Reminds me of the client of a realtor friend of mine.  We had a hailstorm back in June that messed up a lot of roofs in the Austin area.  His client had a pretty high deductible but knew he wasn't going to be able to sell the house with the old roof, so he went ahead and paid $10,000 to replace the $30,000 roof.

He put it on the market, had a pending sale, and then another hailstorm hit.  The second was much worse and was enough to damage even brand new shingles.

So the client is out another $10,000 out of pocket to replace the roof.

Ooof, that sucks.

Coincidentally, I too had roof damage from that first storm, and finally got around to calling it in a couple months ago.  Just this morning, 3 pallets of shingles and other roof materials were delivered to my driveway and tomorrow the install should occur.

Big difference for me-- my $30,000 roof replacement is only costing me $1,000 on the deductible.

Lesson-- it ALWAYS hails in Central Texas, a big one every 6-8 years.  Better make sure it doesn't bankrupt you.

Travel planning can be exhausting at times, but I recall when we had to phone for reservations and stuff.  No email confirmations.

I was a AAA member so I could get those books with motels in them in places we were going.

Our traveling is about to get somewhat intense.  We just got our air for Japan, so I'm making hotel reservations in Tokyo and Seoul.  It's on American Airlines, which is a pity as we have zero status with them.  But it's way cheaper than doing it myself.

Meh, our problem is that 90% of flights we would take from here are on Delta.  I doubt I'd use AA again unless we got booked bia the cruise line.

I got the United card for that reason before our flights on Air Canada.  Now I have some miles on United I likely would never use.

I think my wife said she had applied for that card already.

They have two - Barclay's and Citi. I have Barclay's and my wife has Citi.

It's nice to board Group 2 and sit in the better seats for no upcharge. Two free checked bags each, if we wanted (we don't) that come out before anyone else's do. This is a nice thing at the bigger airports.
