Although they occur naturally in many foods, the flavor contributions made by glutamic acid and other amino acids were only scientifically identified early in the 20th century. The substance was discovered and identified in the year 1866 by the German chemist Karl Heinrich Ritthausen, who treated wheat gluten (for which it was named) with sulfuric acid.[13] In 1908, Japanese researcher Kikunae Ikeda of the Tokyo Imperial University identified brown crystals left behind after the evaporation of a large amount of kombu broth as glutamic acid. These crystals, when tasted, reproduced the ineffable but undeniable flavor he detected in many foods, most especially in seaweed. Professor Ikeda termed this flavor umami. He then patented a method of mass-producing a crystalline salt of glutamic acid, monosodium glutamate.[14][15]

Welp.....made through another bout of covid relatively unscathed.  Worse than the first time I had it, but it wasn't that bad and I'd still rather deal with that than the flu.  Only thing with this that I notice....it happened last time and seems to be happening this time.....the fatigue is hanging on well after other symptoms are gone.  Last time I dealt with this for several weeks.  Looking forward to snapping out of it and being able to go about a normal day without constantly feeling like I need to crash for a nap.

I worry about this "long COVID" thing, whatever it is.

Going to see my doc later this month for an annual "wellness check".  I had one last week with an NP here in the condo, they give me $50 for doing it, it's pretty silly.

Pretty common, and not that silly.  Patients have quite a bit of problems headed off and dealt with more effectively due to early detection because of annual wellness checks, and insurance companies pay out less in claims in the long run, so they frequently incentivize customers.  Some companies require it.  The main insurances accepted at "my" clinic offer a choice of gift certificates....$50 gift card for Amazon, Walmart, or some restaurant, I believe.

Why do you have to do another check if you just had one last week?

The in home wellness check is just a Nurse Practitioner asking questions about this and that.  I find the questions mostly silly, and it's not anything I'd use to evaluate my health situation.  She took my pulse, which is always pretty low, in the 50s, and listened to my breathing, meh.

I'm going to the doc to get an RSV vaccination and to get blood tests and for him to check my heart.  He's the one who spotted my heart issue a couple years back.  I may need a tetanus shot too.

I'm just not understanding two annual wellness checks, one in-home and one in-office.

Well, I get the $50 for the former.  I wouldn'tdo it otherwise, it's a waste oftime.

For the in-office, you swipe a card of some kind and for the in-home, you needs some one-dollar bills.

So, I go to post this on FB as well, and it won't let me, something about Canada now allowing it.  Very weird, their bots are off their feed.

My daughter lives in Canada, but I have no clue why this pops up now.  It says I can't post ANY new items any more.

I have my home listed as being in Brazil (anything else about me is false also).
