Tenderizing a steak with baking soda was a success, see cooking thread for details.

A thing I don't understand is "coffee shops", like Starbucks etc.  I can see a few of them, but they are everywhere.  I saw another one is opening up near me.  I gather the appeal is with the 20-40 crowd, which lets me out of course.  I still don't grok it.

My step son and his GF went every afternoon to one.  My wife has one of those machines to make her own, she doesn't like the shops either.  I don't know if it's a social thing or folks really like $4 coffee.

I get the social aspect
there is a nice place in Lincoln where people meet and study
I had a business meeting there mid-morning

I don't get sitting in the drive thru for 15 minutes to pay $5 for coffee

I could understand a few coffee shops around for whatever, but the number of them astonishes me, with more on the way.

I counted 17 within a mile of me, including 3 Starbucks.

almost like bars, or fast food joints, or 7/11

We don't have anything like that many bars here, and of course the ones we have are mainly restaurants with a bar.  As for fast food, we have two that I can think of, in a mile, a Panera and a Chipotle.  No 7/11, but there is a "Quickstop" which is kind of the same.

I count 7 places with bar, pub, or tavern in their names.  Charles Barkley is known to hang in the Eleventh Street Pub at times.

I gather these are "places to go and meet up" and whatnot.  It just amuses me a bit.  You can of course go to most restaurants and sit at a bar and order coffee to your hearts content.

I was thinking about this just this morning.

I think a major component of it is that everyone can make whatever they're buying at Starbucks.  But they get to feign ignorance about the absurd ingredients in it that they'd never concoct on their own.
No one would put a bunch of vanilla syrup and caramel sauce in a coffee they made at home.  At least I hope not.

I don't drink coffee, so I could be wrong.  But yeah, you get a sugared-up caffeine guilty pleasure made a lil less guilty bc another person is making it for you, and you get a nice little addiction going.

Fun stuff.

When Starbucks went public I thought it was a scam/fad.  Later I noticed a line of cars outside the Starbucks I drove by each morning, waiting on coffee.

I could understand some around college campuses (and I'm near one, about 2 miles).  Of course, I don't really understand steak houses much either.  Or salad places.

"Hey, let's dine out at that new salad place."

I think bars here have to serve a certain amount of food.  I don't know of any bars that don't.  There is a new very fancy cigar bar that just opened near us.

Here's the deal. You take $5/day for let's say 25 days/month. That's $125/month. You hire an adviser to open a managed investment account for you and you write the advisor a check for $125.00 every month. After 40 years, it looks like this - at a modest interest rate of 5 percent.

At 8 percent, it's $440K!!!

I wish everyone understood this stuff.

I went out to the track to run a bit yesterday, and a fellow walked by with rap music, not all that loud, but I could hear it and make out some words as we walked along.  I'd say every fifth word was the F word or the N word.  The "music" was a drum beat, the usual stuff, and the same tune over and over and over.  He seemed to be enjoying it, and maybe it kept him from burning everything down.

On weekends, some folks rent these tricycle motorbike things and they often have the music turned WAY up.
