That is a shame, 'cuz you can't not eat your fill at a Cajun's house.  Feeding people is their version of shaking hands.  Indeed, they're usually offended if you don't eat their food.

I really shoulda got my great-grandmother's recipes, if she used recipes.  I wasted my youth.

I was young and dumb and self-involved and immature in my 20s and into my 30s, but by my mid-30s I figured out that I didn't know everything, and I should probably set about to start learning the important stuff.  That's when I finally started asking my parents about their recipes and learned to cook their signature dishes. That's when I learned how to make my dad's enchilada gravy, and really perfected BBQ brisket and ribs, and worked on my chile relleno technique.

I did it with intent, with purpose, and I'm really glad I did.  Not only because I can now make those delicious dishes without having to wait for my parents to get around to it, but also I'm preserving their legacy, and hopefully someday my kids will want to learn how, as well.

Yeah, I never really tried to learn to cook until about a decade or so ago. And then, obviously, I did as I usually do, and went deep down the rabbit hole.

But one thing I have NOT tried to do is to learn my parents' recipes. I wanted to learn to cook good food instead.

We do have an extended family cookbook that my mom put together a couple decades ago, preserving some of the family recipes. A lot of it isn't very good (based on the time there are a surprising number of jello mold recipes), but every once in a while I get a hankering to take all the good stuff, add some more from both myself, my wife (& her family), and others, and try to modernize it to pass on to my kids and my wife's nieces/nephews...

My goal when I had the kids was to cook with one pot, two at the most.  I did a fair bit of beef and chicken stew, all in one.  I didn't count grilling as a pot if I grilled, which I did a fair bit also.  I still favor one pot meals.  Our deal now is usually whoever cooks doesn't clean up after.

One trick I use is to offer to fix "spaghetti" for dinner, which my wife thinks we have too often, so she then says she'll fix something.  She's on to me now though.

My mom cooked most of our weekday meals.  With three kids, simple, fast, and cheap were always her goals.  She wasn't a gourmet chef but she managed to make a lot of meals that tasted good and filled us up.  The recipes I grabbed from her were some of my favorites but they're by no means magazine-print-worthy.

My dad cooked more on weekends.  Sunday breakfast before church was always a big deal-- migas or scrambled eggs with chorizo, home fries, homemade biscuits and gravy, with bacon or breakfast sausage or thick-cut fried ham.  And of course lots of grilling and BBQ, and then his homemade enchiladas.  Chili when it got cold, and chile relleno for special occasions, because they're a lot of work.

Has anyone noticed the price spike on deodorant?  Just a regular stick of deodorant cots like $8 now.  Eggs are getting all of the headlines, but Jesus Christ, I'm about to drag my smelly, sweaty ass into my representatives office to figure out what's going on here
