One of the world’s largest winemakers, Australia’s Treasury Wine Estates (TWE), has acquired a California vineyard for $1 billion that it hopes to make the linchpin in its efforts to enter the U.S. premium market.

It's only an entitlement if you get it and never worked. For the rest of us, it's just a return of our own money with zero interest.

I figure an entitlement is simply something to which one is entitled.  An annuity, an insurance payment, SS, a tax refund, even welfare.  The rules are out there for whatever and if they favor you with payments, it's an entitlement.  Somehow the term became a negative.

I could get back more in SS than I paid into it, unadjusted for inflation it's probable if I live long enough.  I figured I was paying into it so my parents would draw their share.

I can't think of another use for barley beyond animal feed.
I can think of a pretty damn good use of barley...

Daou makes pretty good stuff.
When I went to Daou, I wasn't overly impressed with their stuff. Their grounds are absolutely amazing, and the winery is perched on top of a hill with some of the best views in Paso Robles. But during the tasting, I honestly didn't really feel that the wine was all that great. The only bottle that I'd consider purchasing wasn't worth the price they wanted for it.

I do know they are the winery behind Pessimist and other labels that are pretty popular, so I can see why they'd be primed for a buyout. Especially for the stated purpose (getting a foothold in the US market with distribution/etc). But it reminds me a little of someone making a "splash" purchase like Constellation Brands did with Ballast Point brewery during the heyday of the craft beer boom. It won't surprise me if this doesn't end up panning out and being worth a billion dollars when we look at it down the road...

As long as it has a malty base you are on the right track
Suburbia:Where they tear out the trees & then name streets after them.

A bottle of Daou at Costco here is $20, and I think it's a good value there.  I have not had any of their higher end stuff.  I USUALLY don't think a $200 bottle is really that much better than a $40.  Diminishing returns etc.  A properly aged Insignia is however pretty larruping.

Yeah, not saying Daou is bad, of course. Just wasn't impressed enough by the smaller-batch things we were served in their tasting. The one I liked most was selling for about $80/bottle, and I didn't like it that much.

Heck, the only one that my wife really liked was the rosé they were serving when people arrived b/c it was a very hot day. She doesn't normally like rosé much but figured we'd buy a little of that... And they told us they don't sell it at the winery--but you can buy it at the Albertson's grocery store in town! :57:

So they have their bespoke on-premises wines and they have their high production wines. I think the high production wines are probably a much better quality/value proposition.

I find my taste in wine varies, sometimes back and forth, and there is some variability bottle to bottle in the same year.  I usually get a case of wine at Tower (or more) as they confer a 10% discount (Costco does not).  I find I may like a wine and pick up a case and over time find it's not that great, still quaffable but not transcendent.

I usually look at some of the $10 or so types, I find Josh to be a decent label in that range.  I may snag a $20-40 for a weekend here or if we expect company.  I have not bought anything over $50 other than Champagne in eons.  I have some stashed away that probably need drinking by now.  I used to buy some $100 types and lay them down, which is fine, but then I'd never drink them.  Then I find them and discover I bought it in 2002 and it's really past due.
