And that is why, up to the Civil War, New Orleans was bought, sold, and fought over for most of European settlement of the Americas.

I thought it was for control of the delicious Creole food.

And in the US, that does make a lot of sense, because for Louisiana, for example, to bar barges originating in Iowa from accessing the Gulf would both be preposterous and be a massive violation of the Constitutional protections on barriers on interstate commerce.

However, they're still considered landlocked because they don't have direct access to coastline.

It was actually for control of all the corn dogs in Baton Rouge.

I work for a large, multinational company based in the mid west. We get lots of Midwest transplants and people from all over the country. They all tell me they’re shocked at how Texas is vs how they imagined. They expected a more deserty, western scene and instead they’re greeted by green flatlands and 50” of annual rain.

Texas is only green where all the people live, lol.

Go west out of San Antone and then turn off your brain for the next 600 miles.

She took off from Tel Aviv about one hour ago, thankfully.

Well, she was waiting at the gate that bomb sirens went off and everyone in the airport went downstairs underneath the airport to the bomb shelter.  She could hear booms in the background, so naturally, she was quite nervous to get on the plane.
We are ecstatic to see this!

Actually, west of San Antonio for about the next 150 miles, is the Texas Hill Country, which is quite beautiful.  It's the next 400 miles beyond that, that are more like southern New Mexico and Arizona.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln is home to over 75 roundabouts. CNBC released a special highlighting Nebraska’s capital as having the most traffic circles, right after Carmel, Ind., which has 145.

Dan Carpenter is the manager of traffic engineering at Lincoln Transportation and Utilities.

Carpenter said the safety of Lincoln residents is the driving force behind the implementation.

“It demonstrates a significant investment into both our city streets as well as the safety and citizens around Lincoln,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter said the roundabout at 56th and Yankee Hill Road is the most successful project. He said before the construction, from 2016 to 2020, there were 20 car wrecks on that road, eight of which resulted in injury.

Since the roundabout opened in 2021, there have been two crashes reported, none of them serious.

“We’ve seen pretty instant benefits from this intersection alone at 56th and Yankee Hill,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter said the roundabout also cost the city less money. A standard four-way intersection can cost up to $1.4 million, however, roundabouts can cost between $750-$950,000.

Texas Hill Country:

I've rarely spent much time West of San Antone.  Once to Big Bend in 1986/87 (just before 4th grade).  And then a few trips over the years towards Uvalde (Frio River area).  But this picture matches my experience.  Can be very beautiful in places and certain times of year.

Third from top is the Frio River at Garner State Park.  It's fantastic.  We get there at least once per year and we go more often when we can.

I took the family to The Flying L ranch in Bandera about 30 miles west of San Antonio twice in the 1990s

This is a really great Hill Country dude ranch with a golf course

We went horse back riding, tubing and I got in a few rounds of golf

We took a day trip to Fredericksburg and had a blast

I really recommend that place for the family looking for something different for a vacation

bring money cause it aint cheap
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.
