My wife came to me last night showing Jupiter on her phone just to the right of the moon.  She wanted me to get my telescope out, something I don't often do, but did.  I don't use it enough to be familiar with it and it took me a while and a few lenses but I finally found the moon, and then Jupiter.  That was pretty cool, we could see the four major moons.  She bought it for me a while back so I was glad to be able to use it, but I need to practice with it more.

How bad is the light pollution living in the middle of ATL? I would think that would make viewing nearly anything pretty difficult.

BTW here's a pretty cool site showing some stuff one of my coworkers from NH does:

He's got a photo put together of the ISS transitiing across the sun, as well as across the moon.

Light pollution is bad of course, but the telescope punches through it.  What makes it hard is trying to view an object that isn't readily visible to the naked eye, which is nearly everything.  We can see Venus and Mars and Jupiter unaided, often as not.  Saturn is tough to see generally.  Any other star is just a point of light anyway.  The tripod on this scopre is not quite stable enough in the mounting, to there is a lot of jitter at higher mags.  I don't know a way to fix that in order to do any astrophotography.  My wife snaps photos with her phone.  THey arne't very good.  Mine is similar to this one, not the same.

In my view, yes.

The "elite" do everything they can to control and consolidate power.

Just look around.

In other news, we have football today. Go Gators!!
The "elite" are a made up bogie man that changes depending on who one wants to be mad at. They are, on balanced, illusory.

It worked.
Was there much evidence it did? Or a lot of feelings?

And if pissing all over basic constitutional rights works, I suppose I can't agree those ends justify those means. But it is what it is.

There is a lot of evidence. Look at homicide rates before, during, and after.

I visited NYC in 1994. It was a crime-infested shithole.

Gulliani and then Bloomberg made it livable. I visited a few years ago.

Now it is heading back.

As far as basic Constitutional rights, the Constitution states:
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated"

That doesn't say "No stop and frisk" and I wouldn't interpret it to say that.

From what I'm seeing, the massive improvement in homicide rate proceeded stop and frisk?

And if that's the standard for rights, it would argue we have functionally none at all. If I have a right that my person can't be searched unreasonably, and the reason can be as vague as "the government wants to" then it's no protection at all.

I mean, if you're fine and dandy with getting felt up and having your pockets gone through for the greater good, God bless you.

I think the part I emphasized actually says that. Wouldn't you agree that the government having the right to search you, without probable cause, just because you're in public, is unreasonable?

And as BAB says, we saw a marked decrease in all violent crime starting about that same time, nationwide. There are multiple possible explanations for that, but stop & frisk in NYC obviously didn't have a nationwide effect.

1994 Crime Bill, as promised during the 1992 Clinton Campaign. Joe Biden wrote most of it.

Of course, things change we are where we are now.

I disagree with both of you because it IS interconnected.

Starting as far back as the 1950's left wing crime policies started to take over.  There were a lot of aspects to this but generally lenient sentencing was one along with SCOTUS interpretations changing in a direction allowing a lot more to criminals and a lot less to government.  Miranda rights appeared out of nowhere.  The police were prohibited from using lethal force against fleeing felons.  At one point the death penalty was almost deemed unconstitutional and there were four votes on the SCOTUS for exactly that despite the death penalty being explicitly authorized by the constitution.

Left wing crime policies made nearly every large city in America effectively unlivable.

We had to spend literally trillions of dollars to build suburbs because the policies of our elites FORCED working people out of the cities.

That started to turn around in the 1970's and by the 1990's it had reversed.  People saw the results of left wing policies and said "no thanks, I'd like to live."  NYC elected tough on crime republican and republican-turned-independent mayors in five consecutive elections.  Three strikes laws were passed in most states.  Criminal penalties were toughened up.

Crime dropped and cities became livable again.

Then people forgot why they started voting for tough-on-crime politicians and went back to the left wing policies and guess what?

Chicago is a war zone.  Crime is skyrocketing.  Shocking, isn't it?

If you are in a high crime area, not unreasonable at all.

Well we might have to agree to disagree on that one.

Now, that doesn't mean that I'm advocating "soft on crime". It seems the pendulum has now swung to the point where the cops won't even attempt to stop crime, and the prosecutors can't be bothered to prosecute it. That's ridiculous, and it leads to what we see.

However, I think "stop & frisk" is a bridge too far.
