Multifunction printer on a budget question...

When I regularly worked in my office, I always had access to a scanner and color laser printer. Now that I primarily WFH, and we don't have a printer at home, it can get a little annoying. Especially when I find out on short notice I have to print some stupid thing for kids/school.

I'm looking at the decision of a color inkjet model vs a monochrome laser printer. I haven't owned a printer in over a decade, so I don't know where the current technology is. But pricing for laser printers (at least monochrome) is quite reasonable.

I don't print often, and my bias from the past is that inkjet is just a constant hassle with ink cartridges drying out from lack of use, being expensive to replace, and generally being an annoying user experience. I've long preferred laser to avoid that, and because the output looks more crisp as well, but given that "budget" laser printers didn't exist when I looked in the past, I don't know if they're as good as what I remember about laser printers or if they're just as much a nightmare as budget inkjets.

Thoughts?

I bought a Brother Laser B&W printer a few years back, I think it was around $100 which seemed like a real deal.  It has worked fine, I replaced the cartridge once (the one it comes with is light on toner).  It scans and copies.  I thought about the color version which was $200, I think, but was cheap.

Interesting. If I get rid of the scanner requirement there's one color laser I can find for $199. However a set of all four color toners is another $200 if I need to replace them :'(

So maybe that's not gonna work.

But glad to hear that you've had good luck with a very budget printer.

And the Brother monochrome one I'm looking at has a much more reasonable toner replacement cost...

This is what I use. Paper up to 11x17 and scan up to 11x17.

Thanks. I assume you have more need for 11x17 than I would.

I've had good luck with a home color laser but I did NOT combine with scanning.

The all-in-one is a great idea in theory but (IMHO) in practice it just means that you have to pay for a new scanner every time your printer quits.

The only thing that sucks about separating your printer and scanner is that making a copy is a multi-step process.

I don't have room for two devices. Hell, I don't have room for one! So I definitely want a combo unit.

I think "they" sell printers near cost to get you hooked on cartridges.  It's best if there are off brands available for replacement.

I used to have an HP inkjet printer that cost a fortune replacing the ink, and I mostly used it for B&W printing anyway.  My wife has a color printer on her rig.

I've had this printer for 42 months - no issues at all.

Probably spend $100/year on ink. It gets a lot of use for my business.

Epson Eco Tank.  Ink lasts forever, no bullshit expensive cartridges to refill.  Scanner works fine.

If you're anything like me, you're not only your own IT guy, you're the IT guy for your aging parents, and your aging inlaws, and your sister, and your brother, and your tech-incompetent friends, and sometimes the next door neighbor or guy down the street.
