When did she drive one?  They have a new model out.  I'm used to the ride in a GTI anyway.  Neither of us want a larger "SUV".  The various reviews of  the X1 are quite good except for the start-stop aspect of it.

I don't really know what a "tin can" rides like.  Our previous Caddy had a pretty stiff ride, I'm OK with it.

I look through car mag and other on line reviews rather than info from anecdotal accounts.  I'm sure some buyers dislike any car they buy.  The car mags can be pretty good at surfacing areas of concern, and they of course have opportunity to drive a lot of vehicles on test tracks and on the road.

But ultimately I'll drive them myself and see how they feel.  I'd rather keep the GTI.

Have you considered the Lexus NX if you're looking at the small SUV market? They've got a couple models (I think it's the NX450 hybrid) that is peppy enough to be 0-60 in 6 seconds. So that should have you covered for acceleration.

That said, I know you're tall but not sure how tall. I will say that the last generation NX was something we were looking at in 2018 when we bought my wife's RX. At 6'5" I couldn't fit in the NX. Depending on your proportions some of those small SUVs may not be viable...

I'm down to 6'3" now, but I fit into the GTI without even having the seat all the way back.  Aside from fitting, seat comfort is a key metric for me, ability to reach major controls, where the steering wheel is, etc.  The Caddy had steering wheel controls that were useful, and when my wife unlocked it, they returned to her position.  The GTI does not have memory seats.

I used to have a Chevy Sonic (with a stick) that I fit in just fine.  That was a decent car for the money.  The GTI is like the Sonic on 'roids.

I tend to think of the Lexus models as fancier versions of Toyotas.

C&D had this to say:

Lexus's brand is centered on comfort, and the 2024 NX SUV plays right into that ethos, effectively hiding the plebeian platform it shares with the Toyota RAV4 and Venza crossovers. Unless it's parked next to the Venza, it's hard to see the similarities. Most NX models come handsomely appointed with high-quality materials. A plethora of powertrain options is available, including a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The latter is a 302-hp setup pulled from the muscled-up RAV4 Prime. Don't get confused, though, the NX is a softie, prioritizing compliant ride quality over apex-nipping aptitude. That means enthusiast drivers will likely find rivals such as the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, or the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class more satisfying. If your use case skews more towards road trips and quiet commutes, though, the Lexus is well-suited for such tasks and features comfortable front seats that are perfect for long drives.

I might check it out, but the softie comment is not my taste.

Masked 'Boot Girls' Are Freeing Booted Cars All Over Atlanta (roadandtrack.com)

We walked by a fairly small parking lot, maybe 35 car capacity, and three of the ten or so cars there were booted.  They have a sign saying you will get booted if you don't patronize one of the 5 or so places in the small shopping strip mall.  It was an odd place to park to go somewhere else.

The previous generation Lexus NX and RX looked good. Not a fan of the redesign.

I don't value "ugly" in a car all that much.  Granted, a handful are not to my liking and it becomes a factor.

My neighbor has a Lexus sedan that he asked me to drive on occasion as he's out of the country for 4 months.  The steering is truly awful, in my opinion, that would be a nonstarter for me.  Zero feedback over boosted.

I'd be sad driving something I thought was ugly.  Aside from my very first car of course, which I was just happy to have, as a 16-year-old.

i just look at it this way-- I paid my dues.

Oh, we're doing that now?

Four speed manual. Top speed: 93 mph. Know that because although the speedo tops at 85, my buddy was driving on a road trip and got a ticket in St Joseph, MI doing 93.
